I reckon Orks could be extremely fluffy for Tau. Blood Axes or Freebooters will work for anyone, Tau will work with anyone.
That is one I had not considered actually. Blood Axes or filling up on Flash Gitz would be ace.

That's why I don't really do allies. Also, it is better when both opponents have used allies to help balance the weaknesses of their army books - I mean Codex - not so good when it is only one sided me thinks.

As for my opinion, for what it's worth, I would go for units that are 'guns for hire type' - Eldar Corsairs/Ork Pirates or the Gue'vesa that Spev mentioned.

I'd quite like to see a 40k version of the regiments of renown. Y'know - Badruck's Flash Gitz, Yriel's Eldritch Raiders, N'ktakataka's Kroot Carnivores, etc, etc. (ok, I made that last one up.) They could do em as boxed sets, and throw in a few just-for-kicks units. Maybe some Sslyth, or some of those lizardy thingies that smell of sour milk from the Dan Abnett books. Anything which might reasonably be a merc warband. Publish the rules in WD, and therein lay out what merc bands will work with what armies. Bob's yer uncle - one (or more) box sets that everybody wants to buy.

*edit* oooh! They could do single mini bounty hunters. Boba Fett in 40k? I'd buy 'im...

@ Eigen: My two cents are to go with Space marines: they're easy to collect, they give you a little more durability in CC, can contribute to fire support and they've fought beside Tau on several occasions in the 40k universe. (If you DA, talk to Underdweller. She might still have some tactical marines and heroes. That would be a quick start.)

Otherwise, I do like the idea of IG conscripts.

Ultimately, go with what you like and want to play. "Fluff" is just as much done with the brush, model knife and pen; when you spend extra time painting, converting and writing up a story for your own army. It is not limited to list building. Hopefully your opponents enjoy it, but most of all, you should enjoy it, because you'll be the one spending the most time with your collection (especially in Japan where games may be months between).

Look forward to whatever you decide on.

I like the idea of converted IG if I went fluff, but can it be done with mechanized IG as well? If we wanted to talk fluff, I would rather see smaller contingents of IG personell with captured mechanicals. I doubt the ethereals would be effective at converting 100% of an IG force towards the greater good and this % could be reflected in the points distribution as well (higher point units, less manpower). But would it work strategically?

Also, I wanted to go Necrons because I think they'll be my next army after Tau. I was debating on Necro or Dark Eldar. Both have a suitably interesting background.

Oh and as for SM...I'm trying to go pure Xeno. I'm fielding Tau and eventually one more, and the gf is fielding greenskins. Nothing against the human race, but aliens get more holidays, and a craftworld sounds like a fantastic cruise destination.

I reckon you could go mechanised. Fluff-wise, there are a large variety of IG regiments, some of which are footslogger, some armour cav, some tanks. Any one of them could be "persuaded" to join the greater good. You could do some interesting things with IG tanks with Tau colour schemes painted on, with old regimental colours showing through as battle damage on the paint. Imperial eagles can actually stay, as the Tau have no problem with Gue'la keeping their religion when they turn renegade. Regimental insignia, otoh, could be covered up with equivalent Tau markings. Overall, could look quite cool. It would also answer the question: what's worse than being shot at by a unit of Broadsides? Being shot at by a unit of broadsides AND a squadron of Demolishers  This would keep the Tau theme of being a shooty army, and at the same time be, frankly, pant-wettingly intimidating...

I've been planning to run Tau allies with my orks for a while. I'm looking forward to trying to model some extra Tau weapons onto Lootas instead of their normal guns. The idea is that the orks are being paid in guns as mercenaries, so I want to model some Tau equipment onto the orks whenever possible.

I wouldn't worry to much about the fluff - it practically writes itself no matter what you pick. I could write volumes about how and why my Space Marines would end up fighting alongside my Orks. The unlikeliness of the scenario just makes the story more memorable.
