As for what units you use in your army, I'm not keen on spam for the sake of winning. I think it makes for a boring game for both players. Flyers, however, are fine. I don't think they're overpowered in general, and even if you don't have AA guns you can generally get away with just ignoring them and get on with killerating the rest of the army. I'd put land raiders in a similar category to flyers, and people have been using those without criticism for years.
Good point. I had a similar thought but you put it well.

Yeah, I know none of us are power mad cheese mongers, I was just curious as to what people made of all the new army building options we have been given. I'm not so worried about turning up and facing three riptides as I am about being out of touch with how other people are playing. I have been running some of the same lists with little variation since 5th Edition, so I want to know what is expected and what is acceptable before I go making any major changes. I'd like to avoid upsetting others and I'd rather not be the guy getting all in a huff because my opponent brought along a special formation and I didn't realise that was kosher.

Anyway, thanks for the responses. I guess it's best to ask if in doubt about something.

After Prim's words I'm going to feel guilty...

I haven't played since last year's NH but I really don't care what you are using for a game as long as we are in the same "rules level" so to say. I always limit myself to a codex when building an army and so far never mixed stuff (except at NH 2012 where I brought an Eldar flyer :o )

I've always considered 40K a very unbalanced game due to the nature of the releases but that never bothered me, if a new codex had a Deathstar unit it was just a question of time to find a counter for most armies, even if that counter involved ignoring the unit. Cries of cheese because there were 2LR on the table always felt like people complaining because they had to change tactics to me.

On the other hand I don't like when people pull weird stuff out of their asses without previous warning. You want a regular game, we can have a regular game. You want unbound, we play unbound, no need to tell me what you are taking, just at what "level" you want to play. But that type of game we all read about where someone arrives to the table with a vanilla army just to see how his opponent puts a Chaos Warhound along with a Thunderhawk supported by 3 Farseers because limits, and courtesy, are for losers certanly riles me up mightly.

BTW this year it's Eldar time again and all my units will be within codex. Not sure what I'll take but up to 3 Wraithkinghts is a possibility  (That's if I manage to buy, build and paint them on time ofc)

I also haven't played since last NH and will basically be bringing all the same stuff this time as well. I guess I'm a 'fluff' player at heart, and similar to what a few others have mentioned am not a great fan of allies (unless it's story-driven - but even then it would be an exception rather than a rule for me). I haven't played anything unbound, so can't comment there and my army is probably the only codex with no skyfire so flyers are annoying but not something i'd be too bothered about unless my opponent brought some ridiculous combination...

When I see Orks and Tau or Chaos and Eldar all running around together as buddies it does somewhat annoy the fluff-lover in me (which is no slight on those who run those combos - and in fact following the fluff is probably more biased against non-Imperium players as I don't really feel the same about most Imperial forces allying together) although perhaps paradoxically I have less issue with this if it is a team game. Go figure.

I guess if you are looking for a pick-up game against anyone who's available, then bringing a Combined Arms Detachment from a single codex at 1500pts is pretty hard to argue against. If you've got room in your case you can feel free to bring all sorts of extra models and variant lists.

I was bringing all-tank lists for awhile due to not owning any infantry yet, but I always tried to give warning about that in the forum thread before the game day ("I'm bringing all tanks!" or "I'll be bringing the IG parking lot again, etc). I recall one game of Auxryn's orks footslogging across the long side of the board to get at my artillery and tanks parked in the far corners, and I don't think it was a great game for either of us. I think everyone was pretty understanding of my situation though, which I'm grateful for.

Luckily I have my troops now, so I'll bring more balanced lists in the future. But I'll also say that my vehicles nearly always died in close combat, and I lost most of my games, so it didn't feel like the parking lot list was too strong to begin with. Assuming I bring combined arms detachments from now on, I don't feel like I'd need to say that I was bringing a tank-heavy list ahead of time.

Going forward... I do want to bring a flyer heavy list for at least one game, but I'll definitely give warning for that. My mortar tanks also strike me as rather undercosted and a little too powerful, but they have a lot of counters (deep strike, outflank, bikes, flyers, or put things in transports to deny them a target), so I'll likely still bring one or two of them every game.
You can't spell slaughter without laughter.
