Thank you for your interest in playing skirmish games in 40K universe. It is good to know some people still have love and likes in 40K universe and models ;-)

@Spevena
Thank you for your information and broadening our options of game choice, especially when it is a fan-made freebie.
I have checked the rule basics in 3rd Ed. I would like to learn more about Retinue lists and scenarios later during this month.

For my son, I would better start with kinda "simple 40K," as he just started to learn math in kindergarten (so additions in ItnE would look too big for him). For us, it seems to be simple enough to learn just before a game.

The 3rd edition rules are a little different to the 2nd edition ones, but not very.
The good thing about the 2nd edition rules is that they have retinue lists. When you build retinues for the 3rd edition rules you have to enter the stats from the 2nd ed retinue lists into the 3rd ed retinue online retinue builder. It's not a very convenient at all :(

If you want to play with your son, have a look for the rules for Space Crusade. It's the simplest way to play with 40K minis that I've seen.

@Spevna
Again thank you for your tips. As for introducing children to miniature gaming, I would try both grid-based and grid-free systems.

One Page 40K might be good for you and your son too.

I have tried a trimmed-down version of ItEN with my son and my wife pointed out the rules are too big for 5 years old. She recommended that we should have only three rules for a particular game. I am working on a kind of Backgammon played with his marines, my "bad guys', and some floor tiles.

That's a great idea with a 5 year old. At that age, just lining up little guys is a lot of fun.

I would be interested in joining this kill team game mode, looked like a lot of fun on miniwargaming's youtube channel when they played it.

I guess you still have to have the minimum number of models per unit? So you couldn't just have one marine scout as part of your team, for example, you'd have to have the minimum of 5?

Yes that's right.
So many games, so little time....
