What he said.

Eternal Guard can make a good (or the best the Woodies can do) 'bunker' for a BSB, especially now that they have become so important for most armies.

Also, the EG fighting style rule actually works quite efficiently with the new rules. All other multi-attack infantry units lose their extra attacks when giving supporting attacks, which means you are wasting points on attacks you won't use. EG have the small advantage that they get the bonus attacks from front rank but aren't wasting them in the 2nd and 3rd.

And as Prim, pointed out, 'stubborn' is very important. There is nothing not to like about becoming stubborn so easily.

@Prim and the Madmiral: You are both wrong ;) My Druchii are indeed from the finest cheese. However, by definition something made by culturing dairy products with BACTERIA can not be clean.

aha, but on that point I beg to differ. The presence or absence of bacteria does not define something as either "clean" or "dirty". Bacteria are a form of life, no different to animals, plants, or fungi (well, apart from the differences that classify em as bacteria, obviously. A campylobacter is clearly not a cow, whichever way you look at it...)

Simply because something is living on it or in it does not make it "dirty" or "not-clean". non-sterile, sure, but not dirty. One could perhaps stretch a point to say that the presence of harmful bacteria could be classified as "dirty" but then you get into the whole "what qualifies as harmful" debate. A staph bacteria on my skin is not harmful at all. in fact, id be in big trouble if it wasnt there, but if i get the same bacteria in a cut, then its gonna get manky pretty fast. Just think of bacteria as our little friends. They can get a bit rowdy if they get in the wrong places, but in the right places, theyre bonza :D

Geek? No, it wasnt game or hobby related information. M_i_J is clearly a closet Nerd, knowing sciencey stuff like that.

Well, I had to study something while I was at uni. The government dont give out grants just so we can go out boozing all day long...

ps: In all my years of studying wee creepin' beasties, nothing stuck in my mind more than this wee factoid:

If one rendered an average human being down to it's constituent cells, one would find significantly more bacterial cells than human cells.

That's right folks. We're mostly not-human...

Anyways, back to Eternal Guard

I was having a read of the Woodies book last night and while they have suffered a bit from the rule changes in 8th they are not completely out of the game IMHO.

They do however suffer from the same 'problem' that all three Elven armies do in this edition. That is, with the stepping up rule they will suffer more casualties in close combat, which hurts these elite armies more compared to the so-called Horde armies.

However, the new strike in initiative order is quite a big boost to all three Elven armies, although Woodies don't get the re-rolls that their Dark and High cousins do.

I think something that will also hurt them is the proliferation of 'Flaming attacks' that are now available and seem to be cropping up more and more often. As well as being good against hydras :D flaming attacks are anathema to some of the 'best' Woody units, namely, Dryads, Treekin and Treemen. So much kindling, so little time.

That said, they are still a very mobile army and can still win by carefully co-ordinating their attacks, which is what WFB has always been about anyway. This edition has gotten rid of one lazy tactic that had begun to define the last edition, namely, build your uber Dragon/Greater daemon/Heavy Cav combo - fire at the front of target unit - wipe out the fighting rank - take no hits in return - win combat - run down enemy - rinse and repeat.

The main presenter Jeff, whilst arguably a colossol moron at times,
thank goodness I'm not the only person with that opinion.

Thanks to everyone else who contributed to this little case study. I guess eternal guard aren't all that bad.

Winning with Woodies is not impossible, just harder than with some armies. There are no 'No-brainer' choices anymore and it would be pretty hard for a noob to win against anyone even vaguely experienced, BUT it is do-able.
