Re: High Elf army list 2250pts

Colonel Voss wrote:the focus on larger units is really hurtful for the wood elves as their current small elite unit style doesn't work all too well. Also the changes in skirmishing really hurts their tactics. On the other hand, certain units that aren't given much attention now are recieving some new thoughts.
Now Woodelf archers can rank up to give them a bit more protection. Armies which had large units (Skaven, Goblins, Vampires) etc will continue to have them whilst armies which never had them still wont (High Elves, Dark Elves).
Its true, the loss of 360 degrees line of sight will cause problems, but I dont think its going to be that major. They only have 3 skirmishing units in the list, and one more which requires paying 5 points a model and lose the extra point of strength on their longbows at short range anyway. Skirmishers can march and fire and may reform facing any direction as they go.
If anything, I can see core units getting bigger. Being able to have 20 glade guard shooting in 2 ranks is better than having 2 units of ten doing the same thing.

It really depends on the objective of the archers. if you want a mobile firing line then 2 of 10 would be better over 1 of 20. and 4 of 10 is even better.

The challenge is that wood elf tactics involve sabotaging and whittling down the opponent much more than high elves. Phoenix Guard and white lions can to an extent handle attrition. However, wood elf units are even more vulnerable. Huge units make it harder to sabotage (though out maneuvering might be easier) and forces battles of attrition much more readily than the current edition.

An army with such a high learning curve will IMO naturally have a high relearning curve as well and the sheer number of changes is going to hurt the wood elves more in the short term than other armies as they are the ones who have to really pay attention to detail already and now must learn the details of a new system. Whether or not they stay weaker, well that's why I called it a prediction. I think the 6th ed books are really going to start showing their age here though.

I dont think its going to be that much of a difference. No-one is going to take huge units in a usual game because there isnt a lot of benefit to having 1 unit thats 10 guys wide and 5 deep. The points values of the army and the total for the game wont be any different so its the same number of models bunched up in a different way. Having the enemy put all their regular models into one super unit benefits the wood elves. The opponent cant charge all the Wood Elf units at the same time. They can only go after one of them. Once the super unit starts to line up a charge, the WE unit under threat backs off and the super unit can either try and chase them round the board or change direction.

Every game of Fantasy I have played in 7th shows that it is better to have multiple units doing the same thing or you wind up only hitting 1 target at a time whilst your army gets torn apart. The fact that two ranks fight now will encourage players to take 2 ranks of cavalry perhaps, but those two ranks will only be hitting 1 target and then spending a turn repositioning. 2 single rank units would be more effective, especially since unit strength has gone. The Elves naturally high initiative will see them striking before most opponents even if they get charged.

I'm still curious to see what the final rules look like as the rumours forums are getting too crowded to make out much now. I guess we'll know in a few weeks.

P.S. I know not everyone can be a great speller but come on "dwaves...impire...britonians" :D :D :D

I logged on today to check the new posts, as i always do, and found there to be 22 new posts, as opposed to the usual 3 or 4. Many of them were in long dead threads. "ah" I thought. "Badruck's back"....

It doesnt matter how much though (sic) went into your list mate if you don't tell us what it is actually a list of. How did you come to such an amazing conclusion? What do you mean by best?

...And a mess of other threads that have been dead for as much as 5 months - probably because the conversations had run their natural course. Courses. Whichever.
