What did you do today.
Re: What did you do today.
I managed to grab an hour's painting before heading off to work this morning. I managed to get a shading wash down on some of my cavalry minis and painted the spears and rifles of some Romans and Russians respectively.

Re: What did you do today.
I have the Dredd/Batman crossover in a box in the attic back home. Got to love Simon Bisely. Just watched the new Dredd movie the other day. Not bad. Much different feel than the comics (the few I have read, the aforementioned Dredd/Batman, a handful of Dark Horse re-prints and the Block/Apocalypse War you lent me). No aliens or spaceships or lasers, not a CG monster to be seen. Just a violent, gritty low budget cop movie, just regular cars and streets and people and clothes with just a touch of high tech and psychic stuff.Lovejoy wrote:...the Dredd/Aliens crossover Incubus on ipad. Quite a successful melding of the two franchises, obviously justice prevailed in the end, but not before scores of Judges had been melted by disfiguring acid or feasted on. Old Stoney Face himself is made of sterner stuff, thankfully. On being told that some alien infested access tunnel is "too dangerous" to enter alone, he simply replies "I'm dangerous." And he is. Satisfying finale with Assault Judges in huge tanks entering the undercity to destroy the alien nest, pretty good stuff.

Other great Dredd movies include any of the first few Dirty Harry movies, and Robocop.
But yeah..I think the new movie 'got' Dredd, although the humour wasn't pointed up as much as the comic- and Wagner, the co-creator, was very, very happy with it. The wacky and satirical elements were played down, possibly to more effectively squeegee the vile, vile memory of the campy Stallone version from the cultural conscience. The aim apparently was to make something like The Wire, but with a dystopian future edge. But the comic touches are there. Sequels were touted, that would have dealt with Dredd's conflicted feelings regarding the Democracy movement (a big no-no in what is essentially a Neo-Fascist Mega City One), then the idea was to get Judge Death on the scene for the third of a trilogy. Not sure that would have sat well with the first two, which were to be realist in tone rather than borderline supernatural.
Worth noting that the movie scored a lot of brownie points with female viewers. There aren't many movies in which gender isn't that much of an issue- Anderson isn't a love interest, she is just a rookie who has to earn respect, and besides Dredd has no capacity for romance. They're colleagues who come to respect each other, no cheesy sexual tension or will they won't they nonsense. Refreshing.
Shame it doesn't look like more will be made. It bombed in the cinema, although DVD and other sales were very good. I like it a lot, and still watch it about once every couple of months. For casual fans it's just a good, solid movie, but for Dreddhead fanboys like me it may as well be Citizen bloody Kane.

Re: What did you do today.
I liked the Urban Dredd movie. I'm not a huge Dredd fan, but I know enough about the character (stony) that the movie appealed. Bit disappointed to learn there's little hope for a sequel. I'd've watched that, had it come to pass
Today I did a wee teeny bit of Venom puttering, and came to the conclusion that, really, I need to sleep more. I've been burning the candle at both ends for a few months now and it's been increasingly clear that I'm getting a bit thin and and stretched, as Bilbo would put it.

Recently, I've been working rather long hours and coming home either tired but even more so jazzed to play RTW1. I've rediscovered my Carthage campaign and I'm continuing to bring war to the Roman on the peninsula, along with the Gauls, Numidians, Egyptians, and now the Iberians (the Greeks negotiated an accord with the Carthaginians). Off to bring the sword to Capua. Enemies and Elephants at the Gates!

Nobody's done much recently, I see. Personally, I've been playing Dishonored. Tis good - very reminiscent of Thief.
Anyhow - I saw this today. I'm in a bit of a quandary. If I'm going to get any primarch, it has to be Morty. It's a lovely model. It will be offensively pricey. Not sure what to do...

If you're planning a 30K army, cool. If it is just for painting, it's cool if you ever get round to doing it.me_in_japan wrote:Nobody's done much recently, I see. Personally, I've been playing Dishonored. Tis good - very reminiscent of Thief.

Painting wise, I got some more paint put on my Roman cavalry and Russian infantry tonight and got the first wash down on both units. I filled in a couple of colours on some Samurai and I assembled a mini for my Viktorias Crew for Malifaux.
I also tried Sapporo's new White Belg beer, it wasn't bad.

Re: What did you do today.
The past week, I mostly played bits of RTW1. Last night I brought war to the gates of Rome, but the game froze and crashed so I'll have to refight the battle. Its starting to look like we will all remember the classical Carthaginian Empire and all the Latin names in science books are going to need Phoenician alternatives.
I also painted a bit last night and this morning. It wasn't much, but it is starting the ball rolling again. I'll see about adding something to my Dark Angels tonight.
(Made note of the Sapporo White beer.)

Last night I finished a water seller's building for my shanty town.
Tonight I sank a large amount of Irish whiskey.

There was no hope of painting in the last week, too much sleep to catch up on. Hopefully the Dredd minis I haven't quite done with will get some attention later.
Fancied a WWII fps, so played some old Call of Duty. It's entertaining but all a bit Where Eagles Dare, fending off half the Reich alone whilst carting around a luger, panzerfaust, tommy gun and kar rifle. The other squad members are there occasionally, but they seem to slink off with depressing regularity and ask that you destroy the radio room, wipe out the ss platoon in the Chateaux and bring back a souvenir hitler paperweight all by yourself, when you most need them. Therefore I've ordered Brothers in Arms, cheap on ps3 now and supposedly more 'realistic' in terms of squad tactics and all that jazz.
Tomorrow we can hopefully get wife and baby passports, and plan our summer holiday in the UK, book flights, hotels and decide what to do in London. Can't wait.
