The War Room

Post by me_in_japan » Fri Feb 10, 2012 4:04 am

Bloody good idea, I say. A free app (plus 7 bucks for each full faction deck), officially made by PP, up to date rules, and online play. Where do GW stand on the whole downloadable army list idea? Oh yeah, they're going to great lengths to stop people doing it...

Didnt GW use to do some army builder software about 10 years back?

Not saying they didn't, but it'd be news to me if they did.

I think this is a great idea by Privateer Press to really integrate the game with the latest in tech and trends.

And as for GW and army builder, I can't say it has ever been a seamless fit for the community. Isn't army builder always limited from ever having rules written in the program? GW also has never taken the program under its umbrella and made it part of any of their games.

GW released their own software for building army lists. It came in two packages, Armies of the Imperium and Enemies of the Imperium.

It was never updated as new editions and codices were released.

GW sold it and never supported it.

In short, it was shit and it was a con.

Those are the ones. I think they were up to date for about 2 months after they were sold and then you had to download an update for them. After a while GW just gave up on them. I guess not enough people bought them or something.

Call me old fashioned, but I still like to build my army lists with an army book, a pencil and a sheet of paper.

I also like the pen and paper, but that doesn't make me mistrust new things or different products.

Who said anything about distrusting new products? I'm sure PP will have done a good job with it. However, since I already have the actual cards and books, I wont be paying for it again simply because I can. For people who like digital books and army builder programs, or for people who dont have the rules yet, it is probably a worthwhile investment.

True. Sorry I read something into your post you didn't imply. (probably the lack of coffee today.)

But I think we paper and pencil/pen folk are increasingly the foggies and backward ones. The advantages and opportunities of apps and other digital programs is immense. I think it is wise for the gaming companies to embrace this tech to better gaming and the experience.

while I can agree that embracing new technology can be a benefit to the companies, I don't think preference to paper and pen makes one an old fart. For me, I prefer paper and pen as it has a relaxed feel to it; that I can take my time and think things out as I like. Electronic form always makes me feel hurried. While I think the app is a great idea and if I ever found myself in a rush to put a list together I'd use it, I simply will always prefer the relaxed way of doing things.
