Online painting tutorials

Post by me_in_japan » Thu May 03, 2012 12:01 am

We may already have a thread like this, but I thought to start one that lists various painty tutorials by type. It'll start small, and hopefully grow as and when we find good ones. I you find a good one, post it up and I'll amalgamate it into the OP in the appropriate category. As of August 2012, each time I update a new tutorial, I'll list it in red, until it is displaced by a newer one.

Ok, for a starter:

Techniques

Non Metal Metal, aka NMM, aka nomnomnom

http://www.platoonbritannica.com/index. ... e-to.1654/

Object Source Lighting, aka OSL (we do love our acronyms, don't we?

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Zenit ... rey_Knight

Now, the above tut is largely about airbrushing a grey knight (and nicely done it is, too) but the bit around step 6 is a good illustration of how to OSL eyes and suchlike. Note the eye itself is almost white with just a tint of colour, and that teh light on the surrounding helm fades away to nothing very fast.

This one is waaaaay technical, but it all depends on how your brain works. If this one does it for ya, then all to the good. If, like me, it melts your brain, then fine, ignore it, move on :D

Blending.

Contrast

Not a tutorial, just 2 pictures of the same mini, but with differing levels of contrast painted on.

Massive Voodoo have a number of excellent articles about pretty much most everything, but particular attention should be paid to anything Jarhead says about basing, for lo, he is bloody good at it.

Finally, here is the articles index of CMoN. More knowledge than any mortal man really needs, tbh...

My favorite model is the Ironman model and the Calgar model is a close second.

I know I am probably going to be stoned to death by a mob of howling fanatics for this, but I can honestly say that I don't really like NMM on models. It makes them look very 2 dimensional, especially when there are large areas of it. A little bit here and there is ok I guess, but when you have a model in head to toe armour all done in NMM it looks like a flat image rather than a 3D model.
I'm just waiting for the day when NNMM* becomes the new black and everyone is doing that instead.

I think it's very effective for small details, but I agree that large areas will look better painted with an actual metallic in general.

That said, I was blown away by the model with the loin-cloth on fire.

But the Calgar model did look good right.

NMM is not a bad thing at all, but I think there are other. Ways to make metal look good. Dont tell that to the CMON guys that. It is like telling them that the sky is falling. I guess NMM is the best way to make the models look good when you photograph them.

They are all beautiful models. Exceptional. :)

I woud like to see the same models painted with metallics side by side with the NMM to see the difference.

shows how often you're on CMoN :D Normal metallics are more popular at the moment. It's generally understood that if you want mean and moody you should use regular metallics, but if you're going for a slightly cartoony look (like a lot of rackham stuff) then NMM is good. One isnt better than the other, and neither is one more difficult than the other. Both use the same techniques - its just a question of what kind of paint you use.

The tutorial was just the most recent "good tutorial" I've seen. I intend to post more, illustrating different techniques, as I come across them.

I do have a couple of tutorials on my YouTube Chanel for those interested. I'm not the best painter nor videographer but I try my best.
Here's the link

As for NMM it like MIJ said really Depends on the style the artist is going for. Surly NMM do take more time and are a bit more tricky then using normal metals but still using normal metalic colors in the good way can also be challenging. I love using Vallejo Liquid gold range they make for stunning metalic colors with super fine pigments.
