When an unit charges a "fleeing unit", the fleeing unit gets an automatically enforced Flee! charge response. (P. 17 under Flee!) Only if this still doesn't keep the unit out of charge range is the unit chopped to little bits and destroyed.
In the past a number of games I played we had units chopped up when hit by this charge, but we didn't roll for a charge response.

Oh, well, live and learn. And in this case the distances were too far for my little dwarf legs to carry me the distance, even though I had some awesome rolls.
