Fantasy Battle and Unit fillers.

Post by jus » Tue May 31, 2011 6:47 am

So, the other day I was at badruk's Admiralty house for an awesome battle for the pass where Badruk introduced the idea of the unit filler in fantasy battle to me.

The idea is to replace a certain number of infantry models in a regiments with terrain pieces and/or assorted conversions on joining bases. This is then used to bulk out the unit with more bases creating larger units (not a bad idea in 8th ed.) and also allows you to be creative and make stunning filler models to break up the monotony of rank upon rank of often identical looking models.

At first I was a bit skeptical of the idea, but after thinking about it some more, I LOVE it. You can do some really cool things with rank filler and on top of that, you can effectively expand your army without giving GW any more of your money wahahaha (Hey spevna, High five!)

However in has been known on the the internet that certain enterprising cheap skates will abusive the heck out of unit filler so there should be some sensible things to keep in mind when dabbling with such.

cardinal rules for use of unit fillers:

1. I wouldn't use more than 25% of the regiment as unit filler. There should still be a sense that the regiment is still a rank and file unit...with ranks and files.

2. If you are going to use unit fillers, they should look fecking spectacular, a tree and some rocks won't cut it.

3. Bases should not hinder the removal of casulties to much as the game progress, as jutting large base unit fillers can be a pain for that.

What do you think of unit fillers and will you be inclined to create some for use in our games?

GW had a few articles on their daily Whats New Today page about this and there are a tonne of articles in White Dwarf about it too. I'm sure if you look over the mini gallery on Warseer or CMON you'll find some awesome fillers.
It's a cool way of using up spare bits and making the unit look unique.

looking good I am thinking of doing an Ork army wit the Mantic range... rank filler is one of the main reasons want to get in to the FB game more.... it seems like a good way to model things and a great way to stick it to the man...

but if he's really getting into it without paying them a penny, I can kind of see how he'd be sticking it to em.

Actually, although Im still not about to start playing whfb, i do rather like the idea of these unit filler thingies. No chance I can do a few dead blood angels and call em "unit fillers" for my incubi, no? Maybe some land raider shrapnel, and stick em in my fire dragon unit? no? :D

already in to GW games I just will not be spending any more money on the models they make... I real have not for some time but this is a thread about rank filler I not about sticking it to GW... so with that in mind..

I think not going over 25% is a very good way to do it... but I guess the depends on the unit too... I think a small unit of Cav. might not look right if the ranks are not full.. so I think it best helps a hoard unit I hope to get started on my units soon...

I think even 25% could be pushing it with smaller units of 20. Of course, if you have large blobs of 80 goblins or something it'd be fine.

Hmm. That would give me something to do with those weird teepee / idol thingies in the Skull Pass box.
