Incoming: Storm of Magic

Post by Primarch » Mon Apr 11, 2011 10:53 pm

For those of you who dont get the GW newsletter.
The Winds of Magic are tumultuous. Drawn by Morrslieb, they are prone to rise from a strong gale into a howling tempest. And when they do no kingdom or realm is safe.

Monsters awaken from their slumber and are summoned from their lairs at the bidding of sorcerous masters. Armies assemble, ready to defend their borders or seize the opportunity to gain limitless power. It is in these desperate times tenuous pacts between wizards and creatures of darkness are sealed to create alliances never thought possible.

A time of doom and great deeds is at hand. Will you rise to meet the storm?

Announcing the impending arrival of Storm of Magic, the latest and largest Expansion for Warhammer, the Game of Fantasy Battles. Launched in July 2011, Storm of Magic describes what happens when great eldritch maelstroms roil across the lands. Magic becomes far more powerful and there is a whole range of Cataclysm spells to cast, unleashing untold devastation on the enemy. Arcane Fulcrums burst from the ground, not only acting as loci for the swirling energies that pervade a battle fought amidst the Storm of Magic, but changing the way a Warhammer tabletop looks and interacts with your armies. With such things so crucial to your Storm of Magic games a new range of Warhammer scenery and Wizards will soon be released in time for you to wage cataclysmic battles.

Then there are the monsters. When the Winds of Magic blow with such strength, the fell creatures of the world gravitate towards the tempest, slithering from deep tunnels or emerging from mountain lairs.

With the new Expansion allowing you to use so many different creatures there are a whole host of new monstrous plastic kits on their way. Citadel's queen of creatures, Trish Carden, has spent the last few years in her own lair preparing for the new monsters to be unleashed upon the world and you can see two brief glimpses of what is to come below:

Damn you GW and your little teaser images. Just enough to wet the tongue but we wants moarrr.

I've often wondered why the heresy dragon gets so much praise and the ultraforge dragon, which looks a bit cooler by my reckoning, gets no mentions. Of course I might be a bit biased since I actually own the ultraforge one.

Its nice to see an original idea for an expansion this time, rather than Archaeon and his chaos hosts sallying south to destroy the empire, yet again. Well I guess this time he can do it with Cataclysm spells. They sound like they could be a lot of fun, so long as they keep the balance there and not make things too cheesed out.

hmm what about cataclysmic miscasts charts? Roll 2-4 on the cataclysmic miscast chart and every model on the table explodes in a shower of gore and yuck. game over.

Storm of Magic is up for pre-order on the GW site. It looks great. So many lovely toys! Oh My! :o

As an early Birthday present I picked up a few things that caught my eye. One of them rhymes with 'Shark Elf Black Dragon' :D :D :D

I know everyone is still in mourning after the price rise/embargo thing but we are still able to order from GWUK direct. Its not Maelstrom good but the stuff I bought, less VAT, plus shipping came out to the same price as someone buying the stuff from a GW store in the UK. Not too shabby. On top of that I didn't have to pay bus fare or parking, petrol either so in fact I'm slightly ahead ;)

Shark Elf Black Wagons? Sweet monkey on a bicycle that sounds scary indeed. Shark Elves are the most broken kind of elf around.

I really cant get excited about those new minis. The swirly dust cloud thing is interesting, but the monsters are, basically, not very good. Maybe its the photos, but they seem off balance, like theyre falling over, not attacking. Also, the dragon head is, frankly, rubbish :(

unlike the new Carmine Dragon from FW. Now that is a nice piece of kit. I'm tempted, despite myself.

I rather like the new models I will most likely not buy them but they look good enough to buy them...
