Just saw your Ork MiJ, that piece is stunning, you are an excellent painter.
I dont know why but I prefer your mini over the other guys, it looks better in my eyes.

The base is too big and cluttered, in my opinion. As to the Ork himself ...

I like him. The skin is nice and vivid. Is he a Goff, Evil Sun, Bad Moon or a freebooter?

I think some of the metal details could be differentiated from each other a bit more. For example, the pistons on the fingers of the right hand (assuming that's what they are) should be oily and shiny, not rusted - unless his hand has seized up. Same goes with the other moving parts, like some areas of the gun and the rings on the harness. Also, rust isn't always the same colour. Depending on the grade of steel, it can be bright orange through reddish browns. The gun itself would probably be better in an oiled blackened colour.

The red knuckles is an interesting effect, but I think it would work better if it was repeated on other areas where the skin is stretched over the bones - like the elbows and cheeks. Some disolouation round the bionic attachments would work, too, I think.

Overall, I prefer it to the two you linked to before. Perhaps not as good technically, but the overall effect is better, I think.

yeah, but you're a known base-hater :D

I wasnt really thinking about it. It's a fair question, though. He's my first ork. *shrug* He's an ork. that is all

Fair points, those. Differentiating parts is trickier than it sounds. Likewise with the different colours of rust. You wouldnt believe it to look at it, but there are actually 3 tones of pigment and 4 colours of oil paints on that mini in almost all the areas of rust. I find it buggersome difficult to stop it all just becoming one big brownish red smoodge, though. Summink to work on, I spose :)

Agreed. To a certain extent I went for the yellow/green highlights on elbows and suchlike because I was looking for different colours in the skin tone. I agree though that some redness around the bionics would be good. I had intended to do that, actually, but time ran out before I got around to it. Got fed up with him a bit, too, if I'm honest with myself.

well, thank you both very much. I can't really look at it objectively, but I'm sure that it's not as good as those other two. Still, to each his own, and it's very nice to have done something that folks like :)

OK, techy question here:

which picture do you think looks better?

or

personal opinions are fine and dandy - I find it very hard to gauge which one looks better, so I'd appreciate folks' input so I can do better next time :)

Second one.
The first looks bleak in comparison.

Thanks for all the opinions, folks. Everybody on CMoN agrees with everybody here, so from now on I shall be darkening and contrasting my pics to the standard as seen in option numero deux...

Incidentally, a last minute entry into the ork painting compo...

http://www.coolminiornot.com/288270

that'd be first place tied up, then, with rusto in 2nd, and Skelet in 3rd. Me and Jarhead are curently tied for 4th, but I can see mine slipping significantly through the next week (which is vexing, as it currenly equals my razorwing, but is a far, faaaaar better paint job, i think.)

Ho hum, what can I say? I was playing inna sandpit, but then  *sniffle* big boys came and took away my toys :P

Incidentally, yellow one also entered a CSM.

My first thought was "nice but meh" but then I realised that ITS ALL NMM!!!!

sweet babby jesus...
