Paint Scheme Advice Wanted

Post by Primarch » Wed May 26, 2010 10:07 am

Hi Guys,
I'm busy painting up my High Elves ready for the Beppu Tourney in a little over 2 weeks. I still have 23 infantry, 11 cavalry, 1 chariot and 3 bolt throwers to do. Yikes.

My archers and Swordmasters are done in the standard white robes, silver armour (with a blue wash) and blue trim. My bolt thrower crew have white robes and red trim.

I'm trying to decide what to do with the rest of my guys so I figured I'd ask all you paint monkeys out there for your opinions.
Do I:
A) Do the entire army in the same White, Silver, Blue scheme
or
B) Do the entire army in White and Silver, but vary the trim colour from unit to unit
My idea for B is to do my Silver Helms with green, Dragon Princes with red, and Lion Chariot with brown. I'm still thinking about the spearmen, maybe yellow or orange.

Here is a link to the GW elf colour scheme page http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/conte ... Id=1000012 so you can see what I am talking about.

Would it be better to have a totally uniform look to the army or to have each unit look like part of the same force, but also unique within that force?

In my experience, having even slightly different colors on each unit can really hurt the uniformity of the army and make it look really "busy". A different contrast color might work for one or two special units - like the Dragon Princes - but it might be hard to pull off across the whole army.

Just personal preference, of course, but I'd stick with one trim color.
Feel free to call me Dave!

me too thinky so. It's important to keep an army unified. There are a few armies that are the exception to this rule (eldar, slaanesh and possibly empire spring to mind) but as a rule you want as much uniformity in colour choice as you can get. The models are differentiated by being...well, different models. Stick to codex white n blue and you cant go wrong.

Seriously, what they said.
High Elves look great(?) with a strong unified colour scheme.

A different coloured sash here and there to ID units but aside from that, keep it unified.
