Oooooooobjection yeronner! The setting is ace! It's like a great big gothic cartoon. Ace on a stick, so it is.

I think mat is the only person I have met that does not like the grim dark future setting.

I think 40k is a good system to play if you are new to wargaming and like sci fi. It's definitely a bit bleak for setting but having said that I like the setting as an rpg better than as a tabletop wargame. I think it's a bit macho and over the top at times. For example the winner can often be determined by just comparing army lists and a battle is not needed to be fought. I don't like the way the person who puts their points into the overpowered stuff can just rock up and win. I don't like the way cover doesn't really block LOS and you can shoot in a 360 degree fire arc. Mostly I think the game brings out the worst in me as a player. Competative and scathing. I prefer the simplicity of Space Hulk to be honest. I love that lost in space Alien setting. :)

Retarded compared to what? There are a lot of settings out there in the wide world of gaming and 40K has never struck me as being more of less retarded than most. I'm genuinely curious and am not sh@tstirring.

As for the price? Yep, retardedly expensive if you want an army with multiple choices for each FOC slot.

eBay is a godsend. All of my armies have come off of eBay. But free? I smell something that starts with a "b" and ends with an "ullshit".

Ask underdweller. About her tau. If you know some one who wants to play and does not mind what army they play I can hook them up.

Fair point mate. But not everyone is lucky enough to have a good Samaritan as a gaming buddy. Having someone give/lend you an army isn't a universal option.

I'd like to add that I suspect 40k may have been better around 2nd edition. I really like the overwatch rule and the use of cover. I think Killzone is good. Small unit of crack commanders with lot of extra stuff pointed on the models. Lets see what the new edition will bring to balance and rule changes.
