My humblest apologies. It was never my intent to offend those of a sensitive disposition. I promise to wash my filthy mouth out with soap and water and do a penance.

Danguinius summed it up for me. I'll just amend his comments.

Why Konrad plays (in no particular order)
1. I have 4 fully painted.....150-1000 point armies........... In the old days you could play with 20 figs. That's why I'm liking Killzone these days.
2. It does look impressive when it's all painted and on the table.
3. It is the most popular game and easy to find opponents, even in Japan.
4. Love the setting, haven't read any of the novels.
5. I've played it in it's various editions since R.T. The basic outline move/shoot/assault /WS/BS/S/T/Ld is familair and I don't have to wrap my head around a whole new game system, even when a new edition comes out. It's not about the rules, it's the look.
6. I love converting. I spent 90% of my gaming time and effort in actually making the toys. GW plastics are not just good plastic figs, but good figs and it's much easier to saw a plastic Ork Nob apart than a metal one.

Why I don't play as much these days
1. packing transporting setting up cleaning up transporting everything back on the train
My 40k stuff takes a whole case on rollers. I can get all my Morheim/Necro/Strange Aeons in a mikan box.
2. GW just keeps finding new ways to be jerks. I've spent about 1000¥on them this year. All of it went to Ikeda-san first. I think I bought about 100 bucks US of toys from the FLGS back home....2 years ago.
2. I can't complain about codex updates or "meta-game" clone armies or what ever. I might get in a dozen games a year. I don't play enough to complain, "Oh man, more IG melta spam."
Yeah, I'll always play it too. I mean I'm still having fun rolling dice and making toys and stuff, so why not?
...and now his Head was full of nothing but Inchantments, Quarrels, Battles, Challenges, Wounds, Complaints, Amours, and abundance of Stuff and Impossibilities.....

I prefer the swords and sorcery setting to cogitators and input fields( yeah ok, to be fair there are laser beams as well).

-mephiston can take out 40 black templars a chaplain, an emperor's champion and 3 cenobyte servitors BY HIMSELF. (true story)

-codices past their used-by date are shoehorned into singular builds in order to be effective. e.gI want to run biel-tan eldar. run them with jetbikes and war walkers... wait, thats not really biel tan any more.

-mad dok grotsnik....

-the new grey knights fluff is major face palm with a power fist. SPLAT.

-Matt Ward...

- My 300 year old terminators, venerable veterans of a thousand battles each, whose many accolades run into the untold billions, have just deep struck into a rock... may they rest in peace.
I do enjoy the swords and sorcery setting more, too. But there is story to be had in 40k too :)

I have yet to face any power gamer. I have only played about six games, all with members of our club. They were all really great! Both parties won and lost graciously. There was no list that was designed to kill me by any dirty means necessary. Some units were like :o :o :o       but that is GW for you and after the initial shock, we just got on with it.

I think if I were playing 'power gamers' on a frequent basis I would probably get fed up. I don't play these games to 'beat' people. This is not a sport. Sorry, but that is just how I feel. Not to say that I am happy to get tabled or lose my cool character in battle. I am like Primarch. The best games are when it goes down to the wire with lots of laughs and epic moments.

I play because I enjoy fantasy worlds and all that goes along with it. I play because I enjoy epic moments. I play because I can write stories about my characters. I play because I can spend time talking geek  stuff with my mates. I play because it is good exercise for my mind to think and strategize.

Yep, this a cool hobby I reckon, and our club members are really good people! :D

As to why I play 40k in particular over any other wargme? Probably because it's the first and only I've ever really played.

Not that it doesn't have a lot of features that have kept my loyalty, but part of is that I've already made the investment. Of course there's also the matter of it being the most popular game of its kind (although in Toyama-ken, that's not really a factor...). But aside from all that, here's what I like:

I like the fluff, as cobbled-together and derivative as it might be. I like the gothic galaxy of endless war with it's (deservedly) doomed Imperium of man, surging aliens and vile chaos. I like it even though it's genetically engineered nazi boyscouts fighting space orks hand-to-hand in a world where all the races theoretically have the ability to bombard planets from orbit.

I like painting, modelling and modifying my armies but more than that I like to have an army that's painted, modeled and modified by me. I like being able to get together with friends over drinks, and have everyone all speak this strange, secret language of armor saves and ballistics skill.

I like enjoying the rules where they're good and even complaining about them where they're bad. I like that a string of ones can and will happen to the best played, most optimized list. I like that a gretchin can beat Abaddon, even thought he probably won't. I like that their are players who would charge Abaddon with that wretched little green gretchin.

 I guess that can only be + and + for the Ork player. He could kill Abaddon on a fluke, or waste the Despoiler's time. :D
