You mean like wolf riding space marines? I own 5 of them and have for quite some time (present from my brother), but I still can't get round to actually building them. Everytime I pull them out of the packet I just look at them for a minute then put them away.

TBH, I would proxy the army as Space Wolves rather than go looking for a scorpion themed fan-dex as I am pretty sure the odds of finding one are very, very remote.

pretty much, yes.

btw, why are you quoting yourself? Is this like a new variant of the Spevna stance or something? Thou shalt always post in the 3rd person?

I wonder if using fan codexes might slow down the games? Hopefully whoever wanted to use them would have a few test games before Nagoyahammer, but even if they did new questions that the book doesn't address would be more likely to come up than with official books.

Also I guess even though there are official "broken" codexes, in some cases way more broken stuff could be found in fan codexes just because they haven't been playtested as much. Not that I have ever used one but I have seen similar problems in fan-made RPGs that I have played!

Anyway it would be fun to try out different stuff. Maybe we could have a couple of trial days at Joshin or somewhere else and see how it goes?

I think fan-made stuff is workable, but it has to be done I think with some care to cross-examine points costs with existing units, write rules with precedence (so they both work and you understand how they should be pointed), heavily playtested and opened to criticism and revision.

To be honest, I began checking out the codexes and armybooks posted by Prim, and the Dogs of War and Night Lord lists looked pretty good. The writers were fairly careful to not move things too far from what already existed and there are few new rules and nothing extravagant. Also, overall the lists looked like they'd balance pretty well, with visible strengths and weaknesses.

alright, here is a question,

Who would be wiling to work on a fanbased codex/army list. I would like to help work on one, but not just play testing and what not, but fluff building and what not. Doing a series of NH codexes would be cool. If it gets going, might split it into a GW only list day and a NH approved list day or what not.

Because I hit the 'quote' button when I meant to hit edit.

I see.

Re: vossy's idea about Naghammer dexes - honestly, I don't think it would work. We have enough trouble getting folks here to agree on simple things like whether or not FW is ok, so to create a dex that doesn't make somebody, somewhere throw a strop and refuse to play against it would be nigh-on impossible, I fear. It would only take 1 or 2 interpretable rules to spanner the whole thing good and proper.

Fan dexes should not be ok (waaaaaaay too much room for stupid sh#t)
What is it exactly that you think GW do any differently?
"How about marines riding giant wolves?"
"We could give this dreadnought close combat weapons that generate infinite attacks."
"Hmmm, let's put the Deepstrike rule on Land Raiders!"
"What this game needs is 2 wound Terminators with a 2+ invulnerable save and feel no pain."
Etc.
Ward, Kelly, Cruddace, Thorpe, Troke, Johnson, Priestley, Chambers, Cavatore etc haven't graduated from the University of Gaming with advanced doctorates in Writing a Codex. The only difference between them and us is that if they write up a huge pile of dross then we have to accept using it for the next 4+ years. Just look around the web for comments on Ward and Cruddace (Kelly is fine though) and you'll see strops being thrown everywhere.

I agree that just letting someone bring along any home-brewed nonsense does have the potential for letting people bring along random, stupid, poorly conceived rules. Some kind of vetting program where 2 or 3 people actually sit down and read something before saying Yay or Nay would be a requirement before anything was accepted. Likewise, picking something that had been playtested a lot would be important too. E.g. the Tempus Fugitive fan dexes get playtested a lot. They have several people building armies and using them. They then post feedback on the rules and they get updated.

For some good examples of fun, fan made stuff, the Kill Zone rules seem pretty popular. They aren't official, but the folks who have tried them said that they enjoyed playing them.

At the moment, I am still undecided about this, I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I am leaning in favour of using IA lists without restriction next time (still limiting the Super Heavies, Gargantuans and Flyers mind), as I really cant think of a good reason why not to. Fan stuff is debatable, but if sufficient safeguards were in place I dont think it is impossible, but I am still not sure.

Like Prim, I'm kinda on the fence about fan dexes, truth be told. If a vetting process was put in place, and the rules were made available to all well beforehand, it could be doable, but it would necessitate a lot of work on the part of the vetters. I also think the vetting process should be fairly formalised, with (for example) one person looking at complexity of rules (USRs are good, although no special rules at all is even better. Made-up wierdy special rules are problematic), one person looking at army-appropriateness (is it just a stupid army, e.g. Ninja tyranids, also do the rules fit the theme of the army?), and one person whose job it is to try to break the game using the codex. (approach the codec with a WAAC mentality.)

If that was done, it might be achievable. I think perhaps te best way to to it is to move out of the land of hypotheticals and just ask "who wants to use a fandex? Which dex is it? Let's have a look, then..." and take it from there. Honestly, I don't really think a huge number of folks will be going fr the fandex option, so it's juuuuuuust possible we may be able to come to an agreement before Naghammer next year :)
