I reckon it's got a few strikes against it - it's essentially unsupported (lots of fan support on the web, but most folks won't know that), the models are super-expensive from GW (you can get an Epic army on the cheap between eBay and third-party manufacturers, but most folks won't know that), and 6mm is a niche scale, especially since 28mm has become as dominant as it has. Those things make it a hard sell, and since you need momentum / critical mass of players to get people into a game, it never really has a chance to get off the ground.

Anyway, I'm philosophical about it all. If I can get a game a couple times a year by lending folks an army, I'm happy.

I'd check eBay first - Orks had lots of plastic support and came in most of the starter boxes, so there's a lot of them floating around. Like, here's a nice lot of infantry and battlewagons for 11 GBP, ships worldwide. Here's more gunwagonz than you'd likely ever need. There are pretty often much larger lots of random mish-mashes of stuff available, for not much more money.

And actually, the plastic ork infantry set from GW is very affordable.

Gargants are dead easy to scatch build. Plastic easter eggs or capsule toy capsules for the body, add bits and voila! Or I should say WAAAAAGLAAAAARGH! I tinkered with epic back in 1st edition. But with so many games and so little time, I doubt I'd ever play again unless TOD lent me an army for an afternoon.
There was a computer game Armageddon I think they called it, that was Epic scale. It was a lot of fun too.

Much harder. They were only ever produced by forgeworld, and were expensive then - plus most people who bought them were probably the kind of people who are still playing, heh.

You can proxy with 3rd party figures, of course, and Epic even has official rules in the rulebook and everything saying to go ahead and do so (they're written with OOP GW minis in mind, but...), but it'll be hard to find things that really look like "Tau".
