NH2013 - Decisions so far and a couple more thoughts

Post by Primarch » Tue Sep 18, 2012 7:18 am

So, I need to book the venue for NagoyaHammer2013 in a couple of weeks and I had some ideas I wanted to run past people.

First of all, is there much interest in making it a 3 day event, or maybe an evening and 2 days? I know some people have to travel a long way and was wondering if this would make the trip more appealing. Likewise many people have families and other commitments that mean that even 2 days is pushing it.

Secondly, some changes to the format.
I am thinking to keep this as a team event, but maybe up the size of the teams to 3-4 players. Games will be 2000 points with either 2x 1000 point armies or 1x 2000 points.
Having reread the extra codexes thread, this event will see IA armylists being allowed. However, there will be a no-proxy rule on IA units with FW models. E.g. no using standard drop pods in place of dreadnought drop pods. The new Horus Heresy series wont be allowed for now until I have had a chance to read it.
Winning games wont be the only way to gain victory points. There will be other ways to help your team even if you lose all your games. Likewise, stomping opponents into the ground with an over powered list may well see you losing victory points....

Day 2 will not be a 40K day. You will be able to play 40K, but other games will be available too, though these will be limited so that people can plan what they are going to play.

Overall, I want to promote this event as a fun, relaxed chance to play games with friends old and new. As usual you will get more out of the event if you are there to play 'with' your opponents rather than 'against' them. I will be looking for volunteers to help out once the room is booked.

When you say teams of 3–4 players, do you mean players playing their own games but contributing to points as a team?

I like the idea of allowing Forgeworld/IA stuff so long as the proper models are used.

Both actually. Last event, juggling the odd players around was a pain. This way there is a lot more flexibility as teams can allocate themselves based on opponents available.

In the marine codex it says we can use regular drop pods for dreadnoughts. What was your meaning? We should use a bigger model?

I'd be keen to play one or two days if I'm still wargaming then. I might take a break from it until nearer the time. Would you be prepared to do a play and learn day perhaps one month before so we aren't messing up the rules during the tournament. Only reason I ask this is the intimidating point for me as I have less time for these things lately. I had hoped to join Robs event but it's my school sports day.

Finally would it be possible to have it the weekend before golden week, not during. Otherwise it's hard to make holiday or family plans.

Don't change on my account as I have let you down in the past but that's what would make it appealing.

@Prim - I think all that sounds good bar one thing: players should not be penalised for winning. At all. Even if they kerbstomp a newb. The rules should govern the game, the players themselves should govern how they play it. If a player is of a mind to kerbstomp a newb them let him, and also let him deal with the ensuing fallout afterward. Basically, a player should be able to power game his way through the tourney and win. Of course, if he does he'll have no mates afterwards, but that's his problem.

@ash - fear ye not. I'm in much the same boat re: rules. I still haven't played. I was hoping you and I could get in a game or two in November/December maybe?

Mij : you're on mate! Let's ready our armies for winter then. November sounds good. 1500, 2000?

@M_i_J - If you win every game, good for you. If your armylist looks like it was made using the copy/paste function, or if you act like a tool, you shouldn't expect to get any benefit from it.

@Ash - FW do a special dreadnought drop pod which has some very funky rules. Dreads can use a standard pod no problem. If you want the special one, you should use the special one.
Given the number of games and events between GWeek and now, I am not going to organise anything special for beginners as the chances are no one would come. Just play at MiJs place, Joshin, Ogaki, Fort Spevna, Centre Palace etc.

@prim - fair enough. I was just concerned that you'd be imposing penalties for list building. I'd definitely be dead against this. List building limitations should be self imposed out of decency and a desire not to be a tool, not enforced by the folks running the tourney.

Btw - when I say "dead against" I just mean I disapprove of the idea. I'm not about to throw a strop if you do decide to lay down some list building rules. Tis your show, after all :)

@ash - I was thinking smaller, actually. Maybe a few games at 500-750pts, just to get more practice in in one session. Im not fussed, tho - if you want to practice list building at 1500 or 2000pts that's cool too :)

Ps - 2 days is better for me, as I have enough trouble getting away for that long. Golden week is also good for me, as I basically don't get regular weekends with any kind of predictability, so if you have it on any date that isn't a public holiday I won't be able to commit to going until about a day before, and even then might have to cancel. I get little enough gaming in as it is (um...last time I played 40k was...er...Naghammer, actually.) so if I lose Naghammer too I'll be a sad panda.

I suggest that it should depend on whether or not a kit exists for said model. If there is one (eg a Kill Krusha) then ya gotta use the FW one. If there isnt one (eg a junka) then youre good to go. As long as the scratch build/kit bash looks like it should and all bits and bobs are represented clearly, that is. I should probly mention at this juncture that your junka has no guns on it. Damnfool of a kitbasher forgot to put any on it... :?
