Yes, it's Japanese topiary, "cloud pruning". Called Karikomi here, the first kind of pruning you have to master as an apprentice, basically what I have been doing almost every day for more than a year now. Looks especially good in japanese gardens during the winter when snow piles up on the tops, it's also the most common form of pruning here, if you look around the local gardens many trees look like this.

Put down the averland yellow basecoat on the rest of my first combat squad of marines. It really is wonderful stuff, although it seems to give a final color that's just a tad muddier than what I get with my Iyanden painting scheme. I'll probably do some experimenting with inks to see if I can mitigate that.

Will build that up to the final yellow color on the marines later tonight or tomorrow, then touch up armor plate edges and call 'em done. I have the scout squad ready to get primed as soon as prime time and laundry time get out of sync.

@ Seb: Wow! Seriously amazing. I'm very impressed that you are really going the full measure to master a traditional trade. :!:

Uh, work on models: None! Ah!

Had about 10 spare minutes before work, so I shaded the yellow on my marines. Hopefully I'll be able to get them wrapped up tonight.

Now maybe i'll chill with a movie and some nihonshu.
We'll be expecting to see some very, very tiny and immaculately crafted trees on all your miniatures bases from now on. :D

No no, just found the pics, I have never made a wire bonsai before. But they would look really good as terrain,

Wire trees are surprisingly easy to do. I bought about a hundred miles (I exaggerate) of wire with the intent of making trees for my Cryx swamp project ages ago, and then only managed half a dozen trees before Prim pointed out that a board covered in trees would be a right PITA to actually play on. Gonna have to rethink that one. Still, I can vouch that making trees outta wire is very doable. Not as pretty as those ones, though. Not by a long shot.
