Guy that played Hawkeye in the avengers could do the grit, but would maybe struggle for charm. Downey Jr could do the charm but not the grit.

Honestly, though, I don't think anybody can "be" Indy. It'd have to be a changed character - a woman, or a black/Hispanic/Asian/whatever guy, or a kid or something.

Yeah, Harrison Ford is a charismatic dude who really put his stamp on the character. It'd be like trying to recast the Man with No Name from the Eastwood spaghetti westerns.

Whoever they choose, it's not going to 'be' Indy, so really they can choose anyone they like.* If they are smart they will choose a young actor and set the first story at the start of his career, then as the actor ages, so does the character. They can easily get 20-30 years out of the franchise that way.

I really enjoyed the Han Solo novels that took the reader from his youth until just before he joined the rebel alliance. They would make a great start. Here is the first book:

I don't think they can just recast Indy and keep making sequels to Raiders of the Lost Ark. However, I think they could take a proper stab at a Young Indiana Jones series. Keep it set in the 1920s or so when the dark, mysterious corners of the globe were still… dark and mysterious.

That said, I don't really have faith in anyone other than early 1980s George Lucas to really appreciate and strive for the pulp action feel. Even modern George Lucas showed he couldn't do it.
