Got the metal down on some Epic Iron Warriors:

So now it's advice time: Clearly, they need something. The bases will get some green flock, which will help a bit, but the minis themselves need some detail work, especially to make the Warsmith stand out. First instinct with Iron Warriors is of course hazard stripes and gold trim, and there will be some of that on the vehicles, but trying to put hazard stripes on 6mm infantry would be insane, and there isn't really any place to put trim.

Hrm. Mix in some random gold armor bits, maybe? Yellow gun casings? (Keeping in mind that this photo shows the models considerably larger than actual size...) I was hoping to use all-gold shoulderpads to distinguish the Chosen formations, so I wouldn't want to go too far.

Personally, I'd do the bases in any colour other than black, just for more contrast. :) whatever colour your game board is would be best.

How about helmets, shoulder pads (one or both) in silver, grey or another contrasting colour? Or a whole arm, like the Death Guard of old. Or even just the beaks. I'd go for the helmets myself, to make the heads stand out. If you don't fancy hazard stripes, how about hi-vis yellow or orange?

It might also be worth trying to make the untainted parts - the tracks an exhausts of the Rhinos and the bolters - different to the armour plate somehow.

My board is black, I'm afraid. :D Ash waste is what I chose, so ash waste basing is what I'm stuck with. I put patchy green flock down on bases, and it does help break things up - it did with my Necrons.

I'm not sure that details in silver or gray will be contrasting enough at this scale. Gold helmets are certainly doable, though, and is one of the options I was leaning towards. That plus yellow gun casing might just be enough I think.

Edit: Hmm! I decided to put my money where my mouth is and do up the bases. And they look great! So I put some gold trim on the Warsmith and the Rhinos and I think I'll leave them be.

Next up, Termagants.

Fair enough with the basing. :)

Whole arms or heads in different colours stand out surprisingly well on Epic miniatures. In fact, that's the reason for the Blood Angels using helmet colours to distinguish squad types - the studio Blood Angel army for 2nd edition Space Marine was done like that to make them stand out easily on the tabletop. :) Non-metallic colours will probably stand out better than gold against steel, and a brownish-yellow will probably work best. Something like the old Bubonic Brown or the current Zamesi Desert.

I've got a bit to think, since I'm going to paint up some more minis before I hit them with the matte spray, but I'm actually thinking they look all right:

Could be more interesting visually, but then again they're Iron Warriors. :D The gold on the vehicles breaks up the formation as a whole, and keeping the troopers simple just makes the base with the Warsmith stand out more.

Currently I'm learning why the studio didn't go with the "red skin, yellow carapace and blue markings" for too long for their Tyranids - it's a very busy color scheme!

Not much in the way of painting and the only modelling was putting things back on that broke off during transport but had a great day of gaming in Gifu. thx to Badruck for hosting it and to "from the field" and "eigen" for playing as well. It was good to get the dice back in my hand and to find our how cursed they are at times. Abysmal rolling. It was like a snake-eyes convention was in a town called PV. And Badruck and his saves; . Highlight units had to be Badrucks warboss not using his powerclaw once and, excuse the language, bitch slapping his way through units of Imperial guard  . Space wolves termies, with the backing of b's rolling, soaked up everything we tossed at them except for my firing which didnt make it or wound; 1's. The Imp Lemun russ was outstanding and my storm raven for taking out units or pieces consistently. Game was a war of attrition with few models left on the board to get objectives and it came off a draw. All in all, a great day of gaming and good times.

Today I got no painting or hobby stuff done at all. I did, however, sign for the land my house will be built on, as well as watch the entire 3rd season of Torchwood (Children of Earth), which was bloody good, actually. Some of the best sci fi tv I've seen in years. I'd thoroughly recommend it.

I worked a bit on some terrain. Took a look at Imperial Armor 8 and found the secret weapons I will be working on for the next 25 years. Oh, so many big, big GUNZ!
