I'm pretty much in total agreement with what Ash posted.

I should also add that must of what Prim said is more than reasonable ( being prepared and knowing your codex and the basic rules well).

The part about unrelated chatting I can't agree with though. I know it's supposed to be a tournament but shooting the breeze and getting to know new people is part of the fun isn't it?

True. You can always chat and have fun with the people you are playing with. But if you can see that the other person is taking a while for each of their turns, distracting them isn't going to make them go any faster. :D
There is time after each game for chatting/catching up and a drinking party for chilling out afterwards. 8-)

I like the idea of tabling you opponent turn one. That way there is plenty of time to shoot the breeze after that.

And the most obliging thing would be to get tabled turn one.

Play with the old Tau codex!

With that in mind wouldn't it be better just to compare lists before deployment see who's list is the cheesiest hand out relevant victory points on a d6 roll. 1-3 a few victory points 4-6 a shed load. Pack away and go for a beer for a few hours never having to play such a crappy game again. :P
Edit: joke/irony patched in here

As a newbie to the tournaments here, it's not unreasonable for me to review the rules and find lots of workarounds with my partner! Thinking about deployment before the day comes, prioritizing my models for specific tasks and getting their movement patterns down...basically I'm working at removing the personal delay in deciding on what-goes-where to make up for the time needed when I gotta 'dex dive.

I also might take my Tau battleforce, and my girlfriends orks and shoot them for fun. Oooooh the fun.
