a question regarding proxying

Post by me_in_japan » Fri Mar 14, 2014 12:48 pm

I was bumming around on the FW site just now and my brain threw up an idea at me.

How would folks feel about me using Mechanicum Myrmidons (or maybe the choppy variants) as the basis for some Nurgle Obliterators? There'd be a bit of GS going on to nurglify em, but basically theyre already mechanised humanoids in tatty robes, so there wouldnt really be much need for further jiggery pokery.

Would this be an annoyance for folk, since technically Mechnicum myrmidons are, well mechanicum myrmidons. This isn't something I've set my heart on, and in fact I have had an alternative idea for nurgle oblits floating around my head for a while. it was just something that popped into my head just now :) Regardless, nobody will be seeing anything come of this for ages, as I'm well busy with my corsairs just now, and then I have a whole bunch of otehr stuff to be getting on with before I start tinkering with nurgle again.

Ta for your input :)

Hmmm. My feelings on proxying are fairly well known (or should that be infamous? ;) ). I guess so long as they don't look like Myrmidons when you're done, then fair enough. Mind you Myrmidons aren't a unit that most people are familiar with, so it's not like it would be that easy to get them mixed up in the middle of a game.

Dude, you can build them out of Legos if you want. It's all good man.
edit- Just took a quick look. I sorta like them. Be a dead easy conversion.

yes, this is a question. I don't care, you don't care, but I'm aware that some people care, so I'm asking out of respect for their opinions.

Anyway, the general consensus seems to be somewhere between "sure, as long as it's kinda converted and looks recognisably different" and "lego", so I reckon I'm good to go. It'll be a while before they hit the table top, though. If any y'all change your minds before I get em done, let me know, aye? :)

Proxying is okay within bounds. Please no cardboard boxes.

Of course what you are thinking about MiJ sounds like a good idea. Run with it!

Having seen Lego Dreadnoughts and Lego Predators, I reckon that Lego is a valid choice for making minis.

I have no problem with people using Proxies, but if it is something they intend to make regular use of (ie, not just for a one off game), then there has to be a degree of common sense and fair play involved.
Your opponent should be able to understand exactly what each model is supposed to be. If they have to keep asking about it, then it's a problem. (E.g. These tactical marines are Hormagaunts and these identical tactical marines are Genestealers)
There should be no confusion about what a model is supposed to represent. If it is supposed to be a big stompy assault unit, it should look like a big stompy assault unit. (E.g. using a Killer Kan as a Carnifex is ok, using a grot is not).
The mini should be roughly the same size as the mini it is replacing for LoS and cover purposes.

The person standing across the table from you should be able to tell at a glance what each unit should be capable of (assault units look like assault units, artillery looks like artillery, etc). Confusion should be kept to a minimum and there shouldn't be any rules related shenanigans going on.

Some of the nicest looking armies out there make use of proxies and conversions, the owners have put in the time and effort to find the best match for the units they want to use. In M_i_J's case, the FW Myrmidons look big, shooty and tough, which is fits their role as Obliterators. They don't look like any other models in his force/codex, so there is no potential to get them mixed up with anything else on the table. They are also a mini that everyone is unfamiliar with so no chance for confusion there either. Finally, they look to be about the right size, so they fit the rules for the unit as well.

So in conclusion I am a pedantic, whinging, a##hole, but I would be fine playing against the minis M_i_J suggested in the role he has mentioned for them. :D

Excuses my earlier post it was written when I was having a bad day and was a bit sleepy.

MIJ if a proxy model is on the same sized bace and you are not modelling for advantage in the game. And if every time it comes in to question you give any rules disputes regarding the model itself to your opponents discretion, you are unlikely to have any problems with any proxies you choose to field.

Miguel has an entire Amy of proxies.

My tau are almost entirely proxies.
My Nids are entirely proxy.
My IG are mostly proxy.

I have yet to hear any complaints. So either everyone I play is a two faced tool and secretly loathes my proxy models or they simply don't care.

I prefer to think they don't care or if they do care they tell me in which case I play my Orks because they are mostly wysiwyg.

Or a third option is that we think you generally put enough effort into choosing which minis you use as proxies.
