Star Grunt

Post by The Underdweller » Tue May 13, 2014 5:07 am

Has anyone here ever played Star Grunt? I have had 2 people (non-Japanese residents) recommend it to me as a superior alternative to 40K, which can be played with 40K miniatures.

The guys on this page seem to like it:

And the rules are available for free download, here:

Any thoughts?

Never played it, but I've seen the name floating around the interwebz for a long time. I

Saying that, I've always been too lazy to actually give them a read. I shall give them a perusal this evening though.

It certainly looks like a different game from 40K. That's not necessarily a bad thing of course. :D

From the comments on the site Underdweller linked, the game seems like a fairly generic rule set that can be used to represent quite a wide range of conflicts. The inclusion of an Umpire or GM in the rules is a big difference between Star Grunt and usual pick up games. It sounds like it has a fair bit in common with some of Warlord's offerings where command & control and outmaneuvering your opponent have a greater emphasis than just blasting away with the best units available. (Though I'm sure that having the best units available isn't a bad thing in most games).

I'll add it to the list of games I have rules for but never play. Maybe someday I can add it to the (much shorter) list of games I have rules for and sometimes play.

Well, yeah - the 2 guys that recommended it to me are pretty casual wargamers, so I guess they meant "a SciFi Wargame I like better where you can use some of the same figures" as opposed to "a similar but better wargame"

After watching a (rather enthusiastic) rundown of it on Youtube, I would say the game it most resembles that I have played is Cutlass!, but with units rather than individuals, and without any charts. (Edit - and you need an Umpire to come up with the mission and assign your troops to you - you don't build a list by yourself)

One thing that is a bit different from games I have played is that you have to try to heal any wounded troops, or your morale goes down.

Anyway, it looks like fun but as Prim said there are lots of other games out there, and not a lot of game time, so yeah.. The youtube video actually describes the basics of the game pretty well, if anyone is interested.
