New Dark Eldar

Post by Mike the Pike » Sat Sep 27, 2014 10:55 am

So the new codex is on pre-order from today, as well as the Voidraven bomber. Last week saw a slightly updated Haemonculus and some plastic Wracks. What do you 'orrible make of 'em.

IMHO...
Haemo and a Wracks are quite nice but not exactly new or that exciting. The Haemo is only a slight variation on the existing ones. While plastic Wracks are an interesting addition, they're not exactly my cup of tea looks-wise and I haven't even assembled the fine cast ones I already have.

The Voidraven looks pretty cool. Kinda like a Heinkel He-111 and a Nightwing. The price tag is a bit hefty but it would be nice to fill out my heavy slots with 3 flyers. Hopefully they tweak the rules to make 'em a bit more Eldar-ish. Vector dancer(?) would be nice.

They're a step up from what they were. The bomber would look nice with the right paint job. Overall nicely done I think.

Plastics>Finecast.
Aside from that, they aren't particularly ground breaking, but they fit the current style well. They are head and shoulders above the Space Wolf Sleigh or the Tempestus Short-Bus.

I'm considering a voidraven, but I'm waiting to see what Vect's Dais looks like. If it is sufficiently pimp I may get the instead. I'll get the codex at some point soonish, but I really can't summon up that much excitement about it. It'll be the same fluff, and basically the same rules, but with less special characters and probably simplified rules for drugs. Not really worth the asking price, but no book = can't play, so I guess I gotta swallow it. I know that sounds terribly negative, but I'm just finding 40k a bit uninspiring right now. Still, y never know - maybe the dais will be as cool as I imagine it. (For the record: a bigger raider (double hulled would be sweet, but unlikely) vect in a throne on a raised dais at the stern, lookin arrogant as all hell, surrounded by semi-nekkid slaves and a couple of Incubi bodyguard behind his throne. Maybe even Incubi pilots and gunners. Not gonna happen, but that's how I'd do it...)

The more I read about this book, the less enthused I am about buying it. I know at this point it's still rumors, but they're looking faaaaiirrly solid at this point. I find it hard to swallow the I'm expected to buy a book which will include:

Not 1 single new unit
Most of the interesting characters are gone, including Vect, the dark eldar equivalent of Calgar or Ghazgul.
Lots of the de units seem to have been...boringified.
Vect in a separate book.

Oh well, at least they can be battle brothers with the dangerous elves. You know use them as suicide/distraction units or something while the Wraithknight/Jetbike Flying Circus kills everything else. :D
Just a thought, if there are no new units, you don't really wouldn't need any, uh, new rules would you? I remember getting my Green ass handed to me quite handily by DE on more than one occasion a couple of years ago. I mean for the 2 or 3 games you are likely to get in before the next edition or new, new D.E codex, eh why worry?

I was thinking along much the same lines, actually. Given the infrequency I play 40k, I might be better served just leaving it. It kind of depends on how other folks feel about me using an old codex.

What say you all?

I wonder if those characters will be released later and then you have to buy the Data slates.

I doubt it. GW have been on a purge with recent codexes. If there ain't a GW model for it, it's gone. Sadly, that applies to every single Dark eldar character except Drazhar. :(

Ummm, with all your Chicken Little like whingeing you seemed to have missed a character or two there MiJ. IIRC you have at least one of them painted up and in your possession.
Just in case your nerd rage has dulled your senses, I am talking about Urien and Lelith.

Cue - all sorts of nasty comebacks, flame war and excuses for said whingeing in ...3...2...1
