I like the mechanical chicken! I don't quite know what it's for, but any game that allows you to put that down is worth a tip of the hat.
Yesterday I saw that northstar are flogging off half-price mdf sloops. At the price they are asking, I simply had to snap up a couple for a future pirate project. I reckon I'll actually get round to them - it may take five years though.
Watched the beginning of a German mini-series about WWII called Generation War, billed as a German Band of Brothers.. It cribs from that series a bit too much I reckon. A lot of shaky cameras and freeze frames, and dramatic moments which you can see coming a mile off: eg, young frightened jerry says "maybe we got them all" during a lull in eastern front fighting, and is predictably shot through his coal-scuttle helmet next second as tragic soundtrack swells. S'alright, but feels a bit well trodden.
Almost forgot - really, really liked these upcoming minis (Steiner, Burnaby) from warlord:

After work and dinner, I worked on basing up the battalion of Middle Guard Chaussers, basing the other battery and painting up the artillery pieces.

That's him finished. I'm quite enjoying these minis recently. Not feeling any necessity to do fancy stuff or owt. Tis relaxing :)

The evil zombie robot budgie is a Warjack (bonejack aka chickenjack) for the Cryx faction from Warmachine, btw. Pretty much everything about Cryx reeks of eeeeeeeeviiiiiiiilll. I like 'em

Finished up a basic color test for my PHR force for Dropzone. I was shooting for a military flat gray, but it came out a bit dark. My current choices are either to mix a lighter shade of gray (which will lead to issues with color matching down the line), go down to Volk's and get a lighter gray shade (bleah), or bring it all the way up to white - which would look cool, but bring in all the enormous PITA issues associated with white, not to mention mess up the whole "actual modern military paint scheme" I was shooting for to contrast with the crazy green and blue metalicness of my Scourge force. Hmm...

Dark grey and white urban camo scheme?

A grey and white two-tone is something I'm thinking about. A full-on geometrical urban camo scheme would look cool, but... effort. :D

I may just try picking out random armor plates in white until it looks done, heh.

Edit:

Hmm. The white needs another, and probably two more, thin coats to even things out (and that's the rub with going with it) but I reckon this scheme looks OK and isn't going to be too onerous - especially considering the PHR's low model count.

May go with a smoke instead of blue-black wash on the metallics so they stand out better from the grey armor too.

I actually painted something today!

I got the leader of my Saga Picts (using the Scots rules) done.

I went for what I thought would be very regal looking colors because he's a big wig.

@spev - nice pict! The colours work well, as does your usual blacklining.

@tod - try a bit of shading on the grey. I appreciate that it seems daunting if you havent done it before, but wet-blending would so totally work on that mini. It's fast and works well on smooth surfaces like that. (mix up some darker grey and splodge it into the recesses, then while it's wet get some slightly thinned paint in your base-grey colour and use that to smooth out the junction between the dark and the base grey. Sounds fiddly, but is actually not. Makes a nice smooth transition, and can be improved by doing it multiple times (if you can be arsed). I used it on Mortenebra's dress a few pages back. You can see the joins, but it's a fairly smooth transition, given the tonal range.

Also, for a monochrome scheme like you have, maybe a teensy bit of spot colour to liven things up? either squad markings of some kind (transfers or a masking tape template would make this easy) or just paint some pipes neon blue or summat.

anyway - It's a very nice mini (DZC was my second choice for a new game after infinity, and I agonised about it over the summer, actually) and a nice solid PJ as is. I'll take my advice hat off now :)

Yeah, summat to unflatten the grey is probably called for. It's not so much that I haven't done wet blending and the like before as that I just generally can't much be bothered, heh. But in this case, yeah - since, if anything, I need to lighten it up, I'll probably go for bringing up the edges of the plates a bit. Need to get into some of the join lines with some ink, too. Ah, the troubles introduced by large flat armor plates.

And yeah, there will be lenses and the like on the finished models too to add a spash of color. Unit markings are a good idea as well, if only because I messed up the magnets and one of the dropships only goes with one pair of walkers, so I'll need to know which transport goes with which unit. :D

Image

Mm. Yeah, I reckon that's better. My light grey dried up before I could get to the cowlings on the engines, but that's the idea.
