Rainy Day idle chat topic: Favorite unit

Post by job » Tue Nov 25, 2014 7:21 am

Hey guys, the forum has been kind of dead of late. Of course there's a Joshin Day soon, but otherwise not much.

So on a fine cool Northwest rainy day like today, I though it would be nice to hear about what other people enjoy playing on the 40k battlefield. No restrictions except what unit or character you enjoy most playing.

What is the unit you have most fun playing?

Personally I like playing Chaos Dreadnoughts. Their loyalist brothers come close behind them along with Land speeders and Defilers.

It might be a matter of play-style, but I usually see Dreadnaughts as expendable. Often they just soak up a few shots that might have gone to your Defiler, Daemon Prince or rhinos. Generally they don't pay for themselves and back in the day they used to lumber all over the place with their crazed rule or even worse (or rather more entertainingly) blow up your own or allied troops. The unit is rather flexible and able to shoot on the move. It also turns out to be a rather good can opener. Finally what isn't too like able a giant mechanized warrior? They look cool on the table.

Recently, Eldar Hornets. These are really nice wee scooty, skimmy vehicles from FW. They're mid way in size between vypers and regular eldar tanks (2 hull points). I like their flexibility - highly mobile, and with enough dakka to threaten a bunch of things. They also look cool as all hell.

So, Hornets FTW!

For tabletop effectiveness, Sternguard are far and away my favourite unit. Very versatile with a ridiculous amount of optional weapon loadouts, they always seem to do the job for me. Chaos Chosen come close, but lack the ammo options that make Sternguard a threat to nearly every unit in the game.

Aesthetically, Terminators of all flavours are cool. Tactical Dreadnought Armour is big, imposing and looks great.

I love my Slaanesh Terminators with lightning claws. Relatively fast, with a ton of attacks and they look ace. However, they are pretty hard to get into action intact.
Unfortunately, I don't think I've actually had them out on the table in this or the last edition (mostly because I haven't played CSM recently).

I have only played 40k a couple of times this year, probably the same quota the previous year - so can't comment knowledgably beyond that I love the concept and performance of those lovely grey hunter drop pods.

Tau Battlesuits - a little expensive, but versatile, mobile, and relatively durable. They were one of the only good options for Tau in 5th edition, and are still a decent choice. They can even win at close combat sometimes!

For Eldar even I like rangers and harlequins. The former are free spirits who wish to experience
the wonders of the galaxy, but not lose themselves in it. I also kind of liked that old school movie called Sniper. As for the latter , the harlequins embody the terrible grace and cruelty of the eldar without
the fetish of the dark eldar. Also Harley Quinn was such a cool character.

For tyranids, it is the Trygon and Mawloc. Such awsome looking critters and the fact you can use
great lines like ""Hey, do you hear something?" right before they come bursting out from under you is icing on the cake:)

Lootaz, Deffkoptaz and Bikes. It is so much fun to watch the enemy slowly evaporate under the weight of 36+ S7 shots. Dakkadakkadakka. It's just as much fun as swooping in off a flank and sticking a rokkit up a Leman Russ's butt. Zoom Boom! And bikes just do it all! Except survive the game (usually)......Can't have everything. Also, I put a lot of work into converting and painting mine.

Seconded! Trygons and Mawlocs, plus the portable Termagant Making Factory that is the Tervigon, are the main reasons I chose Tyranids.

Side note: While trying to figure out which vowels went into Termagant, I discovered the word also means a fake Muslim God made up by Christians in the Middle Ages, or a nagging woman - which seems to be a common theme in the Tyranid army...
