here I go again. job hunting

Post by Colonel Voss » Fri Jan 29, 2016 12:08 pm

So I got the news today, my position is being eliminated at Maryknoll. I am again hunting for a job so if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears

I don't know which is more frustrating, that they lie about the reason for my removal or that their lies are so badly done.

I talked with the head sister today with the intention of seeing if she knew of anyone looking for an English teacher. It turned into a talk about my leaving and she asked some pointed questions.

-She did not know about the incident I had with a teacher yelling at me (no surprise there, I knew the principal would cover that up) but once I mentioned the teachers name something seemed to click.
-She wanted to know about the problems I've had with the classes. She seemed surprised to find out that it was just the 3rd year high school students.
-She asked if either the principal or vice-principal had talked to me about things I had done wrong. No they hadn't and I don't even know what it could be that I did wrong.

I have no clue what is going to happen but dang if my frustrations with the principal and vice-principal aren't running high

Well the plot thickens something fierce.

Actually Maryknoll wanted to hire me on as a regular staff member. I had a talk with the gakuincho and kocho and they were talking about how much they could increase my salary.

Then they found out they couldn't because their contract with the agency forbids it and as part of a hakengaisha, the company can reassign me or in this case let my contract expire. Now the school has to find a new teacher and the hakengaisha is doing everything they can to make me just get a job next year so they can be done with me. Their advice to me is to get a contract with an eikaiwa school andthen in april go shopping for a different job (basically breaking contract with the eikaiwa school)

Couldn't the school end it's contract with the hakengaisha? Then, you end your contract with the hakengaisha. Wait till April rolls around, then apply for a job vacancy that suddenly opened at the school.
Alternatively, why can't you, the school and the hakengaisha just leave things as they are, no-one changes jobs, classes still get taught etc.

I don't know the contract stipulations. I can ask. Right now I passed on an idea that the other catholic school hire me while my school pays for it. I work at my school and maybe the other school too.

Colonel Voss, it sounds like a bit of a nightmare. I was let go from a job before some years back and not given much of an explanation other than work it out for yourself kind of thing. Basically this land runs on false hopes, lies, smokescreens and nonsense. The best thing I ever did was to work for myself. Go freelance and not be at the mercy of a vague body of people who can't make clear cut decisions. If you go freelance it has considerably less benefits but the money is better and you can work where you want and the hours which you choose. It's a lot less of a worry and a lot less stressful, then if something goes wrong you know it's on you and not on the whims of someone else.
I've had these experiences from work and personal life, family etc, people taking advantage and deciding your fate without giving a damn about what is best for you. The sad truth is no one owes you a living and everyone wants what is best for them. We live in a very selfish world, especially in Japan. Maybe this is a good time to be your own man a bit more and take control of what is a very manipulative situation here at times. Good luck. I'll let you know if I hear of anything in April. Don't be a victim.
Forget about yesterday, don't worry about tomorrow because all that matters is today.

@Prim-I'm betting Voss has put in his 3 years, so legally the school would have no legal choice but to hire Voss for real. But the school's contract with the dispatch co. states that the school agrees not to do that. The law says, "Must hire." The contract says, "Can't hire Voss. But don't worry, we'll send you Voss 2 for the next 3 years." The company wants the school dependent on them for their staff and don't want them poaching their employees after all.

@Voss- Who you working for, if I can ask? Intecac? Altia?

That " instructor agrees to not work for former client for x years" clause stinks. Can't be really legal though. You might want to ring up the labor board or union or and see if that can actually be made to stick.
If the school is willing, I'd be willing to bet that if the school makes it clear to the company that they no longer require their services after the contract expires, the school could quietly re-hire you for real. The dispatch co. most likely would not waste time chasing a lost cause.
I'd be willing to bet, might take some work to convince the school of that though.
Good luck.
