@spev - for metals, I use the "blatantly filched from Skel on CMoN" technique. To wit: paint em white. Paint em bright shiny silver. Shade down by progressively adding more black to your shiny silver. Add layers of brown ink plus any appropriate splotches of discoloration. Easier to do than describe. Basically, work down from your brightest colour.

Today I finished my first dark eldar jetbiker. Will post pics once the whole squad is done, since they all basically look the same.
