What did you do today.
Re: What did you do today.
@Auxryn - Nice agent!
Last night I started painting some War of the Roses Lancastrians. Hopefully I can get a few more colours on them this evening.

Re: What did you do today.
Since painting's been in a slump all month, I did one of those peripheral "things I've been meaning to do" projects and put the unit marking decals on my Space Crusade guardsmen.

For the DiY method check Tamiya's section or even the railroad section at Joshin or similar store. I got a cobblestone sheet with an irregular pattern sometime ago but I'm sure you can find one of your liking.me_in_japan wrote:past couple of days Ive been prepping and undercoating my Lynch crew for Mali. No particular reason (and truth be told I should probably be paint something useful, like Frostgrave gobbos or making scenery, but something is better than nothing, ne). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew of some good steampunk street base toppers/inserts/bases or failing that an easy method of doing one's own brickwork. I've looked at the usual online shops, but their cobblestones all seem too lumpy. I'm looking for more organised brickwork style streets, with kerbs and suchlike. Anyway, if anybody knows of any such bases, I'd appreciate you pointing me in their direction
On the painting front I decided to start painting the two old arbites in Judge Dredd colors as clearly was intended by GW.

@miguel - railroad scenery is a good idea. I'll have a look and see what I can dig up...

Re: What did you do today.
@Miguel - very nice
The colors work well on those minis (almost like they were planned that way....)
This evening I had a very fun game of X-wing against Moyashimaru. It saw the loyal forces of the empire (a tie interceptor, bomber and defender) face off against the one Wedge Antilles and some Solo bloke in a banged up Correllian freighter. Thankfully the forces of order won out against the rebel scum, with the valiant tie defender landing the killing blow on the worthless smuggler's ship.
The more I play X-wing the more I like it. A game involving only half a dozen ships (on the table) can easily last 2-3 hours, and there's plenty of list-building flexibility in there for those who are so minded, plus the gameplay itself is spot on. Each turn plays fast, and it feels very dog-fighty. For all that the buy-in isn't cheap, you get a lot of game playing bang for your buck. I'm sufficiently enamoured to actually buy it, but the only person I play against is Moyashimaru (and occasionally Satoru), both of whom already own multiple copies, so any input from me would be surplus to requirements.
Anyway: X-wing - thoroughly recommended by MiJ

Re: What did you do today.
I made a thing:

One of the guys at our club arranged for Kev White of Hasslefree MIniatures to run a 2-day sculpting class. That was the first 2/3 of a day's work. Tomorrow, I finish off the other armature (which will hopefully end up more symmetrical, and without such a huge deltoid on its left shoulder), including adding clothing, hands and a face.

Those aren't "old". Those are the new ones (never mind that they've been around for 20 years now ...)Miguelsan wrote:On the painting front I decided to start painting the two old arbites in Judge Dredd colors as clearly was intended by GW.![]()

Re: What did you do today.
This weekend I built the 4ground watchtower. It was a bit of a marathon, 3 hours on Saturday and another 5 on Sunday, sustained myself by watching episodes of Community, Black Sails and good old Inspector Morse. Slow going, but I was in no rush and it is a whopper, with intricate interior stuff as well as the external bobbins.
Not sure about any other mdf terrain makers (other than Sally4th, whose castle was simple to make), but 4ground seem streets ahead in terms of level of detail and ingenuity in the way to parts interact. Very clever stuff and enjoyable to put together with no big issues. Hope that I get a chance to make another big kit from them sometime

Re: What did you do today.
Sadly I didn't get much painting done over the weekend, but I did get a couple of small MDF kits put together. I assembled a barn and cart from Sarissa and a Subway entrance from Knights of Dice.
Having built stuff from a few different makers now (4ground, Sarissa, KoD and Charlie Foxtrot), there does seem to be a fair difference in what they all do.
4ground stuff is prepainted and contains interior and exterior details. However, they are at the pricey end of the market. Personally speaking, I'm not a big fan of the pre-painted finish on some of their buildings, they do need weathering and drybrushing to look good IMHO.
Sarissa is just laser etched details. Not too many layers and very fast to build. Painting takes up a fair amount of time, but they are cheaper than 4ground. I guess it comes down to a Time Vs. Money decision really.
Charlie Foxtrot is a fairly small business still and between postage (Sarissa is a very cheap flat rate) and a lack of tax discount (4ground are big enough to knock off the VAT), the prices aren't as cheap as they could be. They still aren't bad though. The kits come already punched from their sheets (reduces weight for P&P), which means you have to spend some time sorting out the big bag of random wooden blocks you receive. Detail is mainly laser etched in the same manner as Sarissa, but the kits usually have window frames and positionable doors to give it a more 3D feel.
Knights of Dice is an Australian company. Shipping is... not cheap. However, if you order about 30,000 yen in ome go, it's free. Their range of terrain is mainly for modern cities, but they do come with a lot of detail. The interior is still fairly plain, but the outside of the buildings is a couple of layers deep.
/my2cents.
