So. Yesterday was the D-Day event. Where do you start, eh? I don't think I can come close to summarizing or really encapsulating it, so I won't try overmuch, but..
Massive thanks to everyone, especially to Prim and Yellowstreak for what was clearly a mammoth undertaking. I've never seen a table of that size, even at the handful of shows I've attended, let alone had the chance to play on one. I wasn't able to contribute much beyond a handful of minis, a couple of terrain pieces and my physical presence, but I know a lot of the attendees put their blood, toil and sweat into it. And I felt pretty lucky to have the job of commanding part of the British contingent on the beach board itself.
As I hadn't played for a year or more, to be honest I could barely remember how to play, what was needed to hit what, weapon stats etc. I really should bone up on the vehicle and explosive rules especially, when I can play more regularly.
It was a slow careful business getting off the beach, but I think we were there by about 5pm. Phew.
I think one of the things that struck me afterwards, was how intently we were focused in our little pockets of conflict. Perhaps gaming mirrored reality in that it was difficult to have a clear idea of what was going on everywhere - I would look off towards the gaming distance, and there were British Paras taking (or losing a bridge) to German troops, Fallchirmjagers were engaging American Airborne, half-tracks and SS on the move. But it was heads down as we needed to secure the beach. I really liked that aspect of vagueness and confusion though.
Perhaps only one or two of us (certainly not me) saw the whole picture. I'm sure that there were numerous triumphs and disasters elsewhere that didn't effect our own end of game, but the whole uncertainty and sense of chaos added to the scale and vibe of the event.
Ended the day tired but happy, as this was something pretty extraordinary. Certainly lots more potential in this kind of event.
Thanks again to everyone.

Please direct all praise for the day to Primach, he did all the work! And also thanks to Koji who player taxi driver and picked up the big terrain pieces from Prim's house and took them back again.

I hadn't thought about that 'fog of war' effect, but it was very real. From where my army was positioned I could see the British Airbourne grimly holding on and (thanks to Stooge-san's incredible ability to roll 6's), lots of german reinforcements massing in Caen.

The beaches were a distant battle from where reinforcements couldn't come fast enough!

A pity we couldn't go a few more turns, as the armour battle that was shaping up in that last turn would have been great to watch!

An incredible spectacle of a days gaming. I hope we get the chance for another 'mega-battle' in the future!

This might be the place as good as any other: Hats off to Primarch for organizing an amazing spectacle. The players; the number of units; the missions; the venue and the terrain. It was something to be experienced.

And all the others who painted up great armies (except that one fool who brought four unpainted half tracks!) and assembled terrain!

What an amazing day Overlord was. :D As Lovejoy and Yellowstreak have said, there was definitely an air of excitement that kept us all on a razor's edge of joy and trepidation every turn! The combination of historical replay and theatrics - yes, including Matt Damon :D ;) - was fantastic, which in addition to the models and awesome terrain, made for a really really great day of gaming.

Thanks to Prim for all of the many many hours spent in the man cave preparing the terrain and minis. Naturally thanks to all the others who also prepared terrain, painted up minis, and game to the event, and most importantly brought with them such great enthusiasm.

These games that re-enact events, whether they be based on actual or fictional scenarios, are so much fun and I look forward to the next one! :)

Overlord day sounds like it was a memorable and fun day of gaming. Kudos to those involved for what was no doubt a lot of hard work and prep.

As for us non-overlorders, today was spent at a nice day of gaming in Kariya, in a right old fancy schmancy building, I have to say. In the morning I had a great game of X-wing against ToD, where a plucky little A-wing pilot and Hera (aided and abetted by Zeb and Kanan, and, frankly, let down terribly by Ezra) in the frankly humungous Ghost held their own very well against my villianous scum incarnation of Sabine in the Shadowcaster, Talonbane Cobra in his K-fighter and the cheeky chappy that is Fenn Rau in his Protectorate Starfighter. Alas for the plucky rebels, thanks to Ezra's poor attempts to pilot the Phantom the scum won the day. Dat Ghost was scary, though.

Later, my Dark Eldar joined Konrad's Squatorks in a game of 1-page 40k against Underdweller and Auxryn's Tau. Highlight of the game for me was when 3 Tau Crisis Suits deep-striked practically on top of my 5 hellions and flamered the bejeezus out of them with 36 dice. The hellions, however, shrugged off every single hit. Rather less funky, however, was the Hellion's following turn, where they charged the Crisis Suits, bounced off, and then ran away and were slaughtered to a man. Hardly their finest hour. Overall, though, this is a very nice system, which has rather revitalised my interest in 40k.

Finally, Spev and I played a couple of intro games of X-wing. Ser Spev seems to have taken a shine to it, so I expect to see a rebel or imperial fleet in his hands fairly soon *fingers crossed for another x-wing player in the area*

Thanks for the kind words guys. I'm going to start up a proper feedback thread to discuss Overlord and any future projects.

Definitely a fun day! It was good to get the Ghost out, although it is a sort of an "all your eggs in one basket" solution. Next time, Ezra doesn't get permission to go out in the Phantom, though, heh.

A very fun game of ASC with Spevna, too - any game that leaves the other guy with an idea for a new project is a good one! It marked the Tyranids' first win too, which is another data point in favor of my having balance more or less ironed out at this point.

Next month's event is Saturday the 26th, which sadly means I won't be able to make it as I've got a lot going on that day, in Kariya again - different venue right near the station.
Feel free to call me Dave!

ASC was great fun mate, cheers.
