After the big cyber-attack on various networks over the weekend, I updated and ran my virus checker on Monday and made sure my PC was clean. As part of the sweep, the anti-virus software picked up a bunch of faults with my system like old files that were still hanging around and broken links to old software. Figuring that old files and broken links weren't something I needed, I clicked the 'fix' button. After that I played some games and watched some streaming TV.
Last night after work, I got home, switched on my PC and couldn't log-in. After some swearing and cursing I looked online on my phone and found a possible solution. Using my wife's log-in, (which worked fine), I checked that the system was properly configured, which it wasn't. Unfortunately her log-in didn't have the option to change that configuration. D'oh! However, rebooting from her log-in did something. When I restarted my machine, it let me log-in to my account. Yay!
So, I log-in to my account and I am greeted with Windows 10's introduction page (the one you get when it first forces itself onto your system). After a second the welcome message cycles to a message saying not to turn off the power and then cycles back to the welcome message. The whole thing then proceeds to flick back and forth between the two, seemingly stuck in a loop. One Ctrl+Alt+Del and reboot later and I am back at the log-in screen. Cursing ensues. Hang on, for some reason my log-in has changed from an orange background to a blue one (my wife's is still orange), wierd. Try to log-in again, this time it works. Huzzah!... oh. I reach the desktop, but the screen is black. The taskbar randomly appears and disappears, but is also black with just a couple of icons picked out in white. The cursor also appears and disappears, but clicking doesn't do anything. More swearing.
Back online on my phone, seems this is a fairly common thing, but usually occurring after booting rather than log-in. Try to find some advice on how to fix it and follow the steps, though with the added frustration that Windows 10 is all in Japanese at this point (because despite having Windows 8.1 installed in English, when the 10 'upgrade' hit, it figured that since I was in Japan that must mean that I need the Japanese OS).
So, I try various things only to have error messages or 'you don't have permission' style warnings to appear. Finally find one option to let me reboot the machine in Safe-mode to try to diagnose the problem. Follow those instructions, 'you don't have permission to access blah blah blah'.
LOTS of swearing.
PC gets switched off, I go downstairs and do some painting instead.
TL;DR - My PC is busted, though only for my log-in/user account. So I painted some Anglo-saxons.
