What do you want?

Post by Primarch » Mon Sep 20, 2010 5:40 am

A certain Admiral has suggested to me that it would be better to change the format of NagoyaHammer for next year. I disagree with him for several reasons, but I figure it is better for you, our members to decide.
Have at it!

I voted for "1 tournament day and 1 non-competitive, multi-system day", but would be just as happy (if not happier, since I'm not a tourney fan) with "1 organized but non-competitive day [of presumably either 40K or WFB] with scenarios, rules and teams and 1 non-competitive multi-system day." Alternating between 40K and WFB for each event seems reasonable, as does laying down some guidelines for just which of the many systems we play will be represented on the free day - just to make sure it's not 8 different guys and 7 different games.

My reasoning: On the one hand, organized play-to-win WAAC play really rubs me the wrong way and seems (to me) to bring out the worst in some types of folks, but on the other hand, pure free play doesn't really give anything that the regular Joshin games days don't.

Of course, I say this as someone who has yet to take part in a NH event, so feel free to weigh my vote accordingly. That said, a wider selection of games on offer might well make me more interested in taking part.

I voted for 2 non-comp days of 40k, as as ToD pointed out, if we were just to play a all-games-ok free for all, then whats the difference to a regular joshin day?

I think its nice to keep NagHammer as a special event - special rules n whatnot. If it was some random dude organising it Id be more wary, but Primarch has so far done a really good job of keeping special rules uncomplicated and fair, so I trust him to continue in this vein.

That said, I think itd be worth giving headspace to considering a change purely as a means to getting more folks to come. I would certainly consider a Warmahordes special event, and I would imagine a fair few of the J players would come, too. Itd be worth asking em at Joshin next time if they fancied such a thing. It would be better as a separate event to Naghammer, though. NagoWarmaHordes, p'raps?

Not a fan of tourneys. As t_o_d said, it brings out the worse in some people. It also makes already douchey people into even bigger douche-bags.

I am keen for it to be a 40K event with some kind of structure to it. I think that having awards for things other than an overall winner would be good. Some ideas that spring to mind are;

Best painted army
Biggest victory/loss of the day (for a single game)
Best conversion

They wouldn't need to have a prize. I would be happy with just an honourable mention or a certificate.

The last event was a tourny and I don't see the point of having two tourneys.

I think that having some space/time for people to do some free gaming would also be a good idea.

As far as having free play events or Warmahordes events, I would like to draw people's attention to something I posted way back in May.
The whole point of having a Nagoyahammer Events board is to set up and run the following.
NagoyaHammer - Golden Week - Fun, relaxed (or maybe not) games of 40k following some kind of theme or mini-campaign.
O-Bomb - Summer - 40k tournament
Fall War - Autumn - Fantasy tournament
Winter Blitz - Free play and fun participation games.
Ok, some of the names have changed, but I am still planning on doing something come January/February time to cater to the Warmahordes and non-GW crowd out there.

fair enough, fair enough. Was just floating the idea. Glad to see you've got it covered. Clearly you're Primarch of the Reliable Planners chapter of marines :P

Aw, that was months ago - and you know, they say memory is the second thing to do. (I forget what the first one is.)

(crickets)

That being the case, it looks like things are probably covered as far as I'm concerned. You've got 40K in summer and Fantasy in autumn for the mainstream GW gaming, and free play in winter. That would mean that if NH in golden week is 40K it's "over-represented", but on the other hand you probably planned it that way on account of it's the most popular. It might be interesting to have a day of 40K mini-campaign and a day of WFB mini-campaign if 8ed takes off in a big way, though.

(Slightly off-topic, but something to think about for the winter event might be a day of WM campaigning a la the PP organized play tournament thingies, but that's a topic for another thread, I imagine.)

If the turn-out is good, I'd like a one-shot RP corner. There are tons of systems out there that would be fun to try with a bunch of newcomers!

I don't have much interest in RPG's (time commitment being big factor) BUT a one shot event where it's all new people playing anew system for the day sounds like fun and I would be mighty tempted to give it a whirl.

A few things:
1.) This was a friendly discussion between me and the high-ranking naval officer. He made a suggestion and I disagreed. This isnt to prove a point or anything, I just want to get some feedback on what I am doing with regards to the main event.
2.)

Excellent idea, but bearing in mind that the majority of the people on this site aren't RPGers (wierd people eh?) keeping things simple might be best. Keep your eyes open for the event early next year and you might be able to run/participate in something like this.
3.)
The Other Dave wrote:It might be interesting to have a day of 40K mini-campaign and a day of WFB mini-campaign if 8ed takes off in a big way, though.
I agree in principle. WFB and 40K are both good systems (as are many other games). For people in Nagoya/Gifu/Mie its not an issue, but for people coming any distance, e.g. Hokkaido and Hiroshima, bringing two big armies just isnt that easy. There are also a lot of people who only play one system and right now, to my knowledge, 40k is a lot more popular than Fantasy.
4.)

I dont know about the PP thingies, so if you have some ideas, please let me know on sunday or post them up on the forum to see what response you get. If it is popular then we can do it. I have seen some info on the "Kill-box" timed tournaments that I wanted to discuss.
