Re: Mtg arena open beta
Well, I listened to the voice of reason (and my gut) and went with Prim’s sage advice. Dumped the lot and went full BW.
All in all, I’m fairly happy with it. Went for 4 wins, which got me 1400gems. Given the buy in was only 1800 due to the sale the other day, that’s 400gems for 9 packs, which I’d say is damn reasonable. (Also, what the heck was that sale yesterday where it cost 400gems to buy 500gems? Wtf? Still used gold to pay for em, mind you.)
Anyway, a valuable Limited Lesson hammered home: bomb rares do not a good deck make. Stick to the basics: removal, evasion, curve and ramp! All will be well if you do.*

Re: Mtg arena open beta
This evening I spent my freebie player draft token, and ended up with a GBW deck. After a very rocky start, (1 win, 2 losses) I won my 4th game when my opponent (who had me completely on the ropes) went and played Channeled Force for 6 and decked himself! He was trying to kill my 6/6, and completely failed to notice he only had 5 cards left in his library. One more turn and he'd've swung and killed me, too. I suspect there was a great and mighty "D'OH!" went up from that particular household when that happened...
Happily, I then went on to win 4 games in total, which given that the entry token was free, meant I came away with 1400 gems, 3 packs, and the cards I drafted. Nae bad for a night's work, I reckon.
Also, I was playing Sealed irl against Sean, and amongst the cards we pulled was an alt-art Indatha Triome, which I really, really like. Also got two of those ultimatums, as well as a couple of mythic rares. Quite happy, tbh.
Incidentally, if you happen to be playing draft any time soon, it may be worth saving your deck, and we can play our draft decks against each other? Seems like a good way to level the playing field, is all.

Re: Mtg arena open beta
I'm starting to get the hang of Ikoria a bit, and am feeling all warm and fuzzy at being able to return to my snuggly old jumper of Esper control. I haven't given it a real, proper run yet, but since I went ahead and spent some wildcards on it, it's been reasonably successful. Also, winning a game with a whole fleet of flying sharks is...i gotta admit, dorky, but fun.
By the way, what are people's experience with Winota, Joiner of Forces? At first I was all "meh, people must be overreacting" but after a few games against Winota decks, I can safely confirm that no, people are not overreacting, and she is in fact busted as all hell. I have never, ever played a game where Winota was played where she didnt just win the game on the turn she was played. If you happen to have a counter or kill spell in hand and mana open on turn 4, great. If not, you lose. I don't mind strong cards, but I really don't get what R&D were thinking with this one. Any thoughts?

*if you happen to be unfamiliar, it runs thus:
Turn 1: small 1 mana dude
Turn 2: 2 small 1 mana dudes.
Turn 3: Ideally, 3 small 1 mana dudes, but realistically, it'll be a creature and another spell of some kind.
Turn 4: Play Winota, everyone else swings, Winota player rifles through their deck and puts between 3 and 6 creatures into play, tapped, attacking, and indestructible.
Game ends.

Re: Mtg arena open beta
I played several games of brawl last week and every single deck was WINota. If she put 1 card into play, she would be great. Putting lots of cards into play at once, she is incredibly overpowered. I am not a fan.

Re: Mtg arena open beta
jolly good show, old chap. A tip of the hat in your direction, most assuredly.
How'd you do that then? Because I am getting hosed every. single. time. I. draft. I've done it maybe half a dozen times and I get either 0/3 or 3/3. That is all. No exceptions. So far it's been 4 x 3/3 and 2 x 0/3. Both are frustrating. I just can't seem to build a deck that works, y'know?
