Re: Mtg arena open beta
uuuurgh. I am done with Ikoria draft, srlsy. It's been day after day of nothing but frustration for me. My decks seem fine. The curves are good, I made sure to have some evasion, and plenty of removal (I mean I had 7 removal spells in my deck this time. Count em - 7, and did any of them come up in any of my games? Noooooooo.) Each deck has a bomb rare or two (not that they ever actually turned up, mind you), and a nice balance of creatures and spellls. But do I actually win any number of games? Nopitty nope. And the mana. Flood, screw, flood, flood, screw. Sooooo often. I havent had so many games where I get my opponent down to 3 or 4 health then they come back and win in, like...ever?
Bah, humbug, and all that jazz. I'm going to my room...
*slam* *receding steps* *door opens, then closes, forcefully*
on the plus side, my esper control deck has been damn solid in standard. Gotta look on the bright side, I suppose

@M_i_J - Hopefully you've cooled off a bit now. I'm on my 6th draft at the moment (currently 4-2 with a Bu deck). Apart from my 7-2, I've gone 0-3 twice, 1-3 once and 2-3 once. On my two attempts at player draft I went 2-3 both times, but netted a pile of rares and entered for free, so didn't care so much.
#edit - Just finished the above draft 4-3 after getting mana screwed.

Re: Mtg arena open beta
I think I may have burned myself out a wee bit on Ikoria. I'm just not really feeling it, y'know?
I'm working on an esper control deck with Yorion, and while it does well sometimes, having 80 cards in it really hurts its consistency. I'm honestly not 100% sure if Yorion is worth it, tbh. I find myself mulliganing a lot, and in losing that card in hand, I'm kinda defeating the purpose of having Yorion. I find the various Uro deck variants very hard to beat, and that's what comes up a lot of the time. I've gotten to the point where I've got 2 grafdigger's cages and 3 Ashioks in my sideboard, and I'm still having trouble. I also have 2 unmoored ego in there, because one day, one glorious day, I'm gonna erase that big green mofo* right out of existence, and when I do, I'll laugh! Laugh, I tells yer!
But anyway, I find I'm just a bit tired of the whole thing at the mo. Or maybe I'm just tired? Always a possibility, I suppose. *shrug* So, I've been doing a bit more regular deck building in actual really real life, and have juuuust about finished an Aminatou deck. I've whittled it down to 113 cards, so if I can just trim away a weeee bitsy more fat, I should be good to go.
Of course, in doing so, I've identified a whole new deck I want to build. It'll be a Dimir (or maybe Esper) deck, based around Sen Triplets**, and stealing stuff
mwahahaha, mwaahahah, MWAHAHAHAH
*Or that blinkin' zenith thingy from the cycle deck. There's another prime target for erasing, if ever there was one...
**Actually, that's a lie. Even I'm not depraved enough to use the Triplets as a commander, although I did pick up the card at the rather nice price of 657yen (it goes for about 20usd usually), so hopefully I can find a way to slot it into the 99 without pissing people off too much.

Well in two weeks we get Historic Anthology III and the permanent return of Historic Ranked, which should open up a lot more options. Amonkhet is also coming soon-ish.me_in_japan wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 2:42 pmI think I may have burned myself out a wee bit on Ikoria. I'm just not really feeling it, y'know?
I'm ok with Ikoria at the moment, but I've been trying not to play it too much. The 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off time limit on draft is irritating, but I can hopefully reach my target of 15 drafts even if I take it fairly easy.
As for Uro, and graveyard decks in general, I've been trying out a black devotion deck with 4 Leylines of the Void. Lots of fun to be had watching opponents pour cards into exile and be unable to use them.

Re: Mtg arena open beta
Historic Anthology 3 has been previewed.
https://mtgazone.com/set/historic-anthology-3/
Nothing too game breaking. Well, except for the terribly game breaking cards like the previously announced Ullamog and Phyrexian Obliterator. Oh and Maze's End. As if Gates need a way to win without an option for the opponent to really interact.
The Shrines look like fun for a jank deck, and the Gempalm Incinerator/Polluter can easily slot into Goblin/Zombie tribal decks quite nicely.
Anything you're looking forward to?

Re: Mtg arena open beta
gempalm polluter is an auto-include in any zombie tribal deck, and is, in fact, in my gisa and geralf commander deck already. It's worth noting that cycling isnt casting a spell, so cant be countered. Or interacted with in any way, actually, other than perhaps by saying "ouch". Plus, there's a ton of black cards that return creatures from your yard to your hand, so you can expect to see this guy being used again and again and again.
Swansong is premier counterspell material. A 1 mana counterspell? Hell yeah. That card's pretty pricey irl, which is the only reason I dont have one.
Unburial rites has potential in a graveyard shenanigans deck (golgari type stuff - ginormous green monsters seem a lot scarier when they actually only cost 5 mana, or even 4)
Tectonic Reformation is the card that zenith flare has been waiting for. That's going to sting, I can tell ya.
Mirari's wake will do horrible things with token decks, particularly ones running March of the Multitudes. Also, when Cryptolith Rite eventually comes to historic (which it inevitably will), this'll be filth.
maze's end - yeah, what you said
Other than that, some useful cards, to be sure (ancient ziggurat, for example, isnt flashy, but will almost certainly be in every deck, pretty much) but those are the ones that jump out at me (plus, yknow, phyrexian eldrazi thingumy wotsits)
I'm looking forward to Historic becoming more of a thing. Also, Amonkhet has me excited. There's some good stuff in there. (The Scarab God! Woo! Also, lots of zombie support)

Re: Tectonic Reformation and Zenith Flare, I don't think they will work together. TR gives cards in hand cycling. ZF only looks at cards in the graveyard.
Anyway, I'm planning on just stacking Leyline of the Void into every deck from now on and Ashiok for good measure.
