I think it is the back ground making it look brown I can see what you are trying to do with the red I an I really like it. I am still not clear on the bace though... the cloth could use something I am also sure he looks great the way he is.. we just cant see it..

no need to apologize it is always helpful to get the advice you need even if it is not what you wanted to hear... for what it is worth I am glad they do not look like the GW models boring... I am sure you can make it work...

Looking forward to seeing the 'true' colours
Just out of interest, what color do the rest of you reckon this fella is. I see the armour as a rich, dark brown with edges in red, hence the chocolate statement. How about the rest of you?

fyi - it is Tamiya flat black, with a zenithal spray of flat brown, with a more selective zenithal spray of flat red. Then all over washed with a mix of smoke, clear red, and a wee bitty water.

so, tehcnically, aye, there is brown paint on it, but it is largely covered by the red. You think I should be more aggressive with the red highlights? I dont want it to end up as just another red mini. Im aiming for a kinda winey burgundy effect. Id like the highlights to be a poppier red, tho. Its a bugger to get it with the airbrush tho, which is why this guy is partially drybrushed. Id really, really like to avoid hand blending the basic infantry if at all possible. the two guys ive done so far (this un and the gunner) are off the Raider, so they can be a tad off colour to the rest if needed.

I like the maroon color. I am sure they will look better if you change the back ground color on the picture...

I think a more agressive highlight would be good. Take a leaf out of my book and make that skank's highlights pop!

I'm willing to bet there is a beautiful, subtle, play of color on that mottled red armor. Just with the glare and the photo it looks like it's been dipped in chocolate.
The loincloth is distracting. The armor is all dark and soft and smokey and the loincloth is this blast of bright white. It's the area of highest contrast on the model and thus becomes the center of focus. I'd tone it down with a flesh or brown, maybe even yellow to balance out the gold spikes on the shoulders.
If you want the viewers eye to go straight to the model's crotch, leave it as it is and just surrender, paint him purple and be done with it. I'm sure the Pike would approve........smileysmileysmiley
