@konrad: we are of one mind, brother. Already repainted the loincloth with charadon granite, highlghts in pale grey. Looks much better. Now all i need to do is find a way to focus it on the face.

@spev: indeed, poppy highlights would be nice. But how to do it? I refuse to highlight every single one of the plates on every single model by hand. From experience (my scorpions) I can say that if I do, I will take about 6 days hardcore painting for 3 models, as opposed to 2 models in 4 hours if I airbrush the basic colour on.

I need a fast way of popping the edges. Any ideas?

finally @ all - what colour should his eyes be? I want a focal point...

*edit* hmmn. Looking at the photo again, p'raps I could just be a bit more generous with the red when I spray the helmet. Make it a bit brighter than the rest of the suit. Then I could black line the slits in the helmet, which would in turn define the face a bit more. hmn...

Well lets get out our color wheel

looks like Blue green would do the trick high lighted with white mixed with the Blue green..

I'm inclined to agree with Badruck, actually.

I could be persuaded to go blue green, as I have a pot of hawk turquoise thats been sitting around since the dark ages waiting to be used. I also really, really like PP's coal black (which is like, dark hawk turquoise...)

Hmmn. Anyway, here's the current state of play (straight blue at the mo, not blue-green.)
The loincloth is NOT black, it is a kinda dark stone colour. The darkest is about as dark as codex grey (actually its charadon granite) and the lightest is almost adeptus battlegrey)

also, a question: Yon blue swishy is my first ever attempt at freehand. Nothing fancy, obviously, but I was wondering: on a swish like that, where should I highlight? Ive never been much good at painting or drawing where there wasnt an actual 3d surface involved...

*edit* the skin is purple, btw. Im sure Mike will be pleased to hear that, at least. It looks white as white in the photo, but its actually pale purple, shaded with black and highlighted to white. Ee doesn't look verra 'ealthy at aw...

I would use drybrushing followed by a wash to subdue the drybrushing after. After drybrushing it will look a bit OTT but after the wash it should be dialled down somewhat. Not an exact science but worth experimenting with.

heyhey! yon reaver on the GW site (raffaela picca) was my "inspiration" (i.e. ripped off idea) for my dark eldar scheme! I saw it on CMON the other day and thought "aha!"

i have a printout of it on my table now :D

Oh, i meant to ask: I havent painted the gun barrel yet (yes, I know its upside down, so sue me...) I was dithering between gold and doing a kinda zaggy blue (or possibly turquoise...) flash on it. Douomou?

*edit* Barstewards! Blinkin GW and their stupid Bleaksoul Brethren. Right! Turquoise it is...

Your gunner looks good. Is it done with the same steps/techniques as the other one? If so, it really must be just the picture. Me likey likey.

exactly the same, bar 1 small difference:

the driver was washed with smoke and clear red straight.

the gunner was smoke plus clear red PLUS some water.

Thats all. I agree though - gunner is much smoother.

^ course not, badruck :) its just your army ideas that are daft. When it comes to the arty stuff, you know what youre about.

anyway, today's (hopefully final) update on colour schemes:

The swoosh on the gun barrel is deeply unsatisfactory, which I think is due to it not having clearly defined edges for me to work with.

Incidentally, my question still stands: does anybody know where swooshes should be highlighted?

finally, the current state of my raider. Honestly, airbrushing is so much fun, Im actually glad i have another 2 raiders to do, plus 2 ravagers in the post...
