Dust Tactics

Post by Primarch » Sun Apr 24, 2011 10:54 am

Well, I picked up this game to use the mechs and infantry models with Secrets of the Third Reich, but have found the game to be an absolute blast.
Image
Setting up the game takes about 5-10 minutes. The rules are very simple and can be picked up in the first game, though as the name implies, learning how to move and use your units effectively has a big impact on gameplay. Gameplay for the units straight out of the box takes about 1 hour.
The models are cool (though not a solid as GW or other plastic minis) and can be painted up nicely (well, as nicely as I can manage anyway).

The core rules and the rules for the 1st expansion are available for free download from Fantasy Flight Games, but I think you will need to register with their site (free of charge).
The official webpage has the basic rules and some wall-papers for free download as well.
Finally there is a smaller company http://www.dustgame.com/index.php making resin upgrades and extra pieces for the game in the same manner as GW's Forge World. The models are about $20 more minimum, but are game legal. Be careful of scale though as the board game is 1/48 but some of the models are 1/36 display pieces.
Having played 2 games and run 1 game for other players I can honestly say that this is a very fast, easy and most importantly FUN game to play and I have already ordered the 1st expansion pack and some extra units.

Edit - The next expansion after Operation Cyclone, entitled Operation Seelowe will see the release of mind-controlled Gorillas with steel fists for the axis forces....

FFG have just announced that they are putting out a new core set of the game. No reason has been given, but the new models certainly look pretty cool.

The release is set for the 3rd quarter of this year.

It's a cross between a Board Game and a Tabletop Game. It looks similar to AT-43 (the original designer was involved in both I believe). It is VERY easy to pick up and doesn't tale that long to play. You can expand it by buying booster packs of squads and mechs. It's roughly 1500 yen for a squad or a mech. :D

Now THIS is a game I would get into. Looks gorgeous (mechs are in the link, I just saw) and the price is something that actually has me checking my wallet.

News from FFG about Dust Tactics.
Fantasy Flight Games is excited to announce the upcoming release of Dust Warfare, designed by renowned miniatures guru Andy Chambers. Our intent to launch a Dust tabletop miniatures game was announced even before Dust Tactics was released. Now the success of Dust Tactics has paved the way for us to take the next step. Currently in beta, this tactical tabletop miniatures game of alternate 1940s reality World War II combat will demo throughout Gen Con Indy 2011.

The year is 1947, and World War II still rages, fueled by the discovery of alien technology. The world’s superpowers have developed unprecedented weaponry, including lasers, phaser cannons, and massive combat walkers. These war machines stride across the battlefield, protected by their heavy armor, and devastate enemy troops with their fearsome cannons.

Dust Warfare players assume the roles of generals, each commanding a custom-built army of squads, walkers, and heroes. Draw upon Axis might or Allied versatility as you wage ferocious battles for control of the rare ore, VK, needed to fuel the most powerful of the superpowers’ weapons.

Definitely some cool new releases these days. Awesome heavy infantry, and...

Hell-lo, what's this?

Could it be...

Nazi gorillas!?

I'm just confused where the Nazis found a source of gorillas to conscript? I haven't head of any either in Germany, mainland Europe or Artic/Antartica. :?:
